Postby pheel » Tue Nov 16, 2010 6:34 pm

i have a 154, my friend has the 184, he said i could put a car's turbo charger on the carburator to increase power 7 hp. is that correct, what type of car has one that would work, how would it be attached.

or is there another way to resonably inexpensive way to increase power pheel

Overhaul the engine will usually noticably increase it's power. Or just buy a bigger tractor.

Question. Ask your friend if he knows what make of car comes equiped with a turbo charger?

Sometimes people giving advice - well let's just say that they don't know what they are talking about.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Your 154 was rated at 15 horsepower when new. The 184 was rated at 18 horsepower. They both have the same C-60 engine, but the 184 had slight modifications to increase the horsepower, namely the use of a Zenith carburetor, and increasing the governor speed so the engine runs at a higher RPM.

If your engine is tuned up, new plugs, cap rotor, wires, valves are adjusted properly, and the carburetor is clean and adjusted properly, the tractor will perform flawlessly, and you would have a hard time finding the difference in poer between the 154 and 184.

I have not heard of anyone using a turbo charger on any cub engine. In reasonable terms, the minimum horsepower for automobile engines is about 100 horsepower, so even on the smallest automobile engine, a turbo charger would be nearly 10 times oversized for a Cub engine. Also, since the Cub engine is a governed engine, drastically increasing the flow of air and fuel to the engine would not do anything, since the governor would limit the engine operating speed (i.e. govern the engine as it is intended).

Lots of people here have played with this engine over the years, and nearly everyone has come to realize that a properly tuned Cub engine is just about all you can ask for. It was designed originally for 7 horsepower, and gradually increased to 18 horsepower over the years. That's about all you're ever going to get out of it.

Well, turbo charging a Cub is possible but certainly not practical. Yes, there are some tiny little turbos available, which are of a suitable size but the problems associated with installing one are many. It's not as simple as hooking a hair dryer to the carb! Just forget it!

a c 60 motor wouldent even rev high enough to spool up a turbo. iv had several turbo dragbikes ,and to do the burnout on a 10 inch wide tire bike you have to rev motor way up tip bike on side so tire aint sitting flat on ground. then dump the clutch and thats with 200 to 500 hp 400 pound bikes. anythings possible but putting a turbo from a car wouldent work for usable tractor power. it could be done mabee for tractor pulls or something like that.

As far as upgrades for more power my god i'm spinning the wheels now in stock form. Plus i don't think the tranny and driveline would take much more power wise, its almost at its limits now, well pretty close. I say get an older jeep 4x4 and build a fun tractor from that to play with. You have options from the 134ci flathead to the 401ci jeep/amc engine. The 134f head is a neat little torquey engine to play with. The gearing makes it unstoppable(5:38 : 1). So sometimes its not the power at the engine its the power at the rear wheels thats counts. The older doodle bugs were interesting but i like the old 4x4 jeep builds better. Pushing snow isn't a challange now.

On my 1200 suzuki bandit i was thinking about pressure charging the air box with a fan. This would force feed the air intake system. But it needs little rubber flap flexable windows so the extra pressure could exit and another set of windows so it could suck more air if there wasn't enough air. We need to balance it out besides pressure charging it. I've never tested my theory yet. But i was interested in getting twin turbos at one time when i was a speed freak.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

i agree with big bill, even if you could ad hp to the 25 30 hp range ,i dont think the drive line would take it. depending what your using tractor for ,if its plowing and using boxblade or rake i think you would tear up the drive train , you might get away with it on a farmall cub but this is more of a oversized lawnmower that looks cool..
