Billy - is the wire that is not hooked up a heavy cable? If you take a fairly heavy piece of wire and jumper across the two large terminals on the solenoid the starter should operate. (Make sure you are in neutral)
It is quite possible that the solenoid contacts are burned - it is a common failure. Since the solenoid clicks it sounds like the control part is working. If you do the test above and the starter turns the engine over replace the solenoid you should have one lighter gauge wire to the control terminal (small terminal) and the battery cable connected to one heavy terminal and the cable to the starter motor on the other heavy terminal.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

billy:

I see BD beat me to it as I looked up the latest edition of the TC-37F Parts Catalog that I have on the server -- the TC-37F Revision 6 (08-79) - Group 8 - Electrical. Hope this helps.

Any one have a diagram for '49 cub with a 12v alternator. Zena's coming back this week from a complete engine overhaul and would like to neaten up the wiring on her.

Billy:

Actually whilst looking on the server I found a copy of Bob Melville's schematics. This is for the later key type with solenoid.

Pathfinder:

This is a copy of Bob Melville's Schematic for a 12 Volt GM 10SI Conversion For on a Super M - it would be similar.

The wiring for your specific alternator may be different if it is not a 10SI

Billy - bypassing the neutral switch is a common practice. Not a good one but a common one nonetheless.

Suggest you start with cleaning the points. Probably glazed over or pitted.
