Troy Bilt question
How are the wheels driven on Troy Bilt snow blower? Do they use belts or are they gear driven. I used my nieghbors to new 12 horse and the wheel drive stopped working. It was dark when I finished returning it and could not really investigate the mechanics of it...

I did find out that it might be a friction drive system which I know nothing of. Tonight I will find out the model number and look into it. Thanks for the link!!

I started to find out more about this. It did seem like the clutch was slipping and not digging in. Thanks Carl!!! Nothing but rain up here now. My feet have been soaking feet since this morning when I had to escort some 82 foot long trusses we built and our tractor got stuck. Nothing like having sneakers on in 3 inches of slush trying to free up our tractor and 78 foot flat bed trailer. More snow is coming they say. Chris

My old Troy built has a worm gear drive.. Very tough.. Surprised the snow blower didn't offer that feature..

The friction drive is also the transmission. It is an effective, efficient, and inexpensive way to move a machine offering variable ground speeds. Unlike the blower portion, a typical homeowner's snow blower does not require a heavy duty driveline.

Troy Bilt has for years been about the top of the line in tillers, with one of the big selling points being the all gear drive. If you pay attention to their adds, you do not see that statement anymore. When they started making them for sale in the Big Box stores, such as Lowes, etc. they had to go the same rout as other manufacturers to hold the price down.HitNmiss1923 wrote:My old Troy built has a worm gear drive.. The real reason behind the changes is MTD makes most, if not all, Troy Bilt snow blowers. MTD has cornered the yard and garden market by buying up the most popular brands and trademarks. Even Cub Cadet.
