I believe that the lock mechanism is supposed to only work when the arms are all the way up, so I'm not sure if that means the cylinder is fully extended or closed (never have looked that closely), but the only way it would make sense is with the 3-point arms all the way up.

There was a tach made for the earlier Cubs, but finding one now is difficult and very expensive if you do find one. It ran off of a gear in the distributor. I think that you could use an electronic tach with a digital display, it would just take some playing with to get the calibration correct. They're really just not that necessary with a Cub engine, since it only runs at about 2000 rpm at wide open throttle.

Look at the pictures in the Owners Manual with it insalled. Looks like it is most of the way down, within an inch or so of the cylinder fully retracted.

Kawman,
See the attached picture - you should be able to estimate the locks length. The length is really not that critical, you can make it longer if you want the 3 point to sit at a higher elevation. Sorry that I can not measure it - my son lives 2,000 miles away and he is away on travel all week.
Hope that the pic helps you, NJDale

Yes, using the lock should speed up the front cylinder, essentially forcing all of the fluid to go only to the front cylinder.

Actual distance between centers is probably not too important just that it is locked somewhere. The oil will fill the void and the other cylinder will work just fine. It's a closed system so my guess would be that you would want to lock the 3 pt in the up position for the best result.
