Jerusalem Artichokes aka SunchokesI was looking to plant part of one of our fields to Jerusalem Artichokes to use as primarily as pig feed. At the most between 1/4 to 1/2 an acre of them is all.... online/catalouge source prices are ridiculous (especially since most consider this thing a weed and it's hard to get rid of). The one farm I knew ofthat used to have some in the one pasture and I asked if I could get some were bulldozed out to make a pond before I got there last year.
Anyway if any of you have Jerusalem Artichokes aka Sunchokes that you'd be willing to sell or trade to me please let me know. Included is the wiki page for a quick referene to what I'm talking about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_artichoke Thanks Jeremy 22 sickle bar mower x2

Re: Jerusalem Artichokes aka SunchokesMy brother had talked about planting it for ethanol but we didn't look into it. From what I just looked up it is grown from cuttings not seed nor was I able to find seed only cuttings. I found quite a few people bought them from a growshery store and planted them. I did find that h they are planted like potatoes but they are in the sunflower family.
The best price I found was $6 per lb but as you bought more it went way down to 1000lbs for $1.50 per lb http://www.ronnigers.com/sitebuildercon ... sorder.pdf The Jerusalem Artichokes are in the center at the bottom. Re: Jerusalem Artichokes aka SunchokesHave been reading up on Jerusalem Artichokes since the topic was posted. Will try a few plants in the garden if I can find some Jerusalem Artichokes in the grocery store to use as seed.
Haven't crunched any numbers, but it appears planting a quarter acre of Jerusalem Artichokes would be cost prohibitive. I have an excuse. CRS.
Re: Jerusalem Artichokes aka SunchokesBefore years of no-till, I knew of several patches in fields. The full tillage just divided and spread out the root crowns, which actually probably promoted good growth. The repeated sprayings have completely removed some of the patches that I ate from as a kid.

Re: Jerusalem Artichokes aka SunchokesStill reading on the topic. Jerusalem Artichokes make for a pretty good deer food plot. Seems deer love them.

Re: Jerusalem Artichokes aka SunchokesYeah, I can't believe the prices for what was/is considered a "weed" alot of the time. I was hoping somebody on the forum had a patch of them that they would share at a reasonable price.

Re: Jerusalem Artichokes aka SunchokesWe have the artichokes along the west fence and them are about the only thing left out there ! most everything else is matured/harvested/or plowed under!
We dont know what variety the artichokes are,---just something a guy handed us to plant, THEN he wouldnt take them after we grew them for him so thats how we ended up with them at the edge of our back garden!--now we gotta get rid of them! lol! thanks; sonny
