Actually, the housing has BOTH! The filler is next to the grease fitting, and it was on both SA's (both '48's) though some do NOT have them (serial #'s 250001 to 298717). I know some Cub folks replaced the filler plug with a grease fitting, but this has a flat space just for the fitting. It's part #109461, item #14 on pg. 178 of the SA Parts Manual. Once you see the inside, you do see that the grease is injected just above the "Steering Worm Wheel Shaft Bearing" which makes sense, since it is far above the gear oil level in the housing. The really strange aspect of it is that the gear oil through the filler on top, goes to the same place. I can only assume that Farmall figured the gear oil would sort of "flush" the bearing as it drained down through the bearing into the housing. Because the seals leaked, all that was left inside the housing was a MASSIVE amount of antique grease...NASTY!!!

I always find it quite interesting when I take things apart and figure out how they work or what the design was all about.

Of course it will be even MORE interesting IF/WHEN I get this thing back together and it actually works!

Hey, Buster38, I plan on swapping a final drive from the parts SA to the survivor, Bubba, next week. You are very close...wanna come play mechanic with me? Merton, in Burlingame, came over Friday and we got SO much done. Some things seemed small, like cotter pin removal. But ever tried to get a 1 3/4" nut off with the cotter pin still in?! I had 3 or 4 things like that that I just could not get by myself...limited access and LOTS of rust! It definitely helps to have some extra hands sometime. You are welcome any time...I'll even buy the lunch!

Dale
