1955 100 FarmallBecame the proud owner of a 100 Farmall yesterday. It has a one point fast hitch with cultivator, planter, double gang disk, grader blade, bushhog, 2 disk breaker, boom pole, middle buster. It is a 2 owner tractor in pretty good shape.
Now for the problem. The battery was completely dead and after we put a new battery in it the generator would not charge (6 volt) was told it needed to have the generator excited. Can anyone tell me how to do this or if it needs it or do I just need to have the generator rebuilt? The owner said it was charging when he parked it last fall. Also need some help on what the equipment might be worth. Will probably sell all but the cultivator and maybe the breaking plow. It was all bought when the tractor was bought new. Rick

Re: 1955 100 FarmallDid you install the battery positive ground? (correct way)

Re: 1955 100 FarmallGuy I bought it from said to put the hot cable to the ground post on battery and ground cable to hot post. That is the way I hooked it up. Is this right?

Re: 1955 100 FarmallPositive post on the battery to the ground cable and negative post to the other cable. Touch a jumper wire from the Batt. terminal on the regulator to the Gen terminal on the regulator. That will polarize it.

Re: 1955 100 FarmallJumped from the batt terminal to the gen terminal but I think it is still discharging. The guage shows discharge but it is very slightly to the discharge side. It has a brand new 6 volt battery. Any other suggestions? Could the guage be wrong? It is just barley off the 0 toward discharge.
When I touched the gen terminal with the jumper I got a pretty good spark. Rick

Re: 1955 100 FarmallTake a jumper wire and connect it to the F terminal of the generator and then to ground. If it charges then, your generator is working and the problem is likely with the regulator or connections.
If it does not charge with the generator F terminal grounded the problem is with the generator. Is your generator belt good and tight? Bigdog

Re: 1955 100 Farmallthanks Bigdog I will try that tomorrow. Do I need to ground to the tractor or back to ground on battery

Re: 1955 100 FarmallGround to good clean metal surface on the tractor. Going clear back to the battery isn't necessary but it works too.

Re: 1955 100 FarmallEngine RPM's above idle? Generater may not be turning fast enough.

Re: 1955 100 FarmallTook the generator off and carried it and had it checked. It checked good. The wires look good and I tighten the fan belt just in case. They said it was probably the regulator,is there a way to check it?

Re: 1955 100 FarmallYou can remove the cover and see if the cutout relay is pulling in. You can also check and clean the contacts. Beyond that, everything is pretty much hit and miss unless you have the right tools to do the job.
Did the generator charge with the F terminal grounded? If not, you still have a wiring problem. Bigdog

Re: 1955 100 FarmallI couldn't get it to charge by grounding the f terminal. I am getting fire out of the regulator to the generator.

Re: 1955 100 FarmallIf the generator does not charge with the F terminal grounded but checked OK at the shop I suspect you are not getting a good ground through the generator mounts. Clean up the contacting surfaces on the generator flanges and mounting bracket or run a ground wire from the generator body to a good ground source.
Please explain "I am getting fire out of the regulator to the generator." Bigdog

Re: 1955 100 FarmallI accidentally touched the terminal (A terminal think) on the regulator, side with the one wire with a screwdriver and it sparked.
