SA PTO Seal removal

Postby Dale Finch » Tue Apr 05, 2011 9:09 pm

Anyone know the best way to remove the PTO Shaft Oil Seal? I have the PTO off the tractor and dissassemled from the Belt Pulley unit. I started to remove the Power Takeoff Gear (on the inside) so I could push the whole shaft out, giving me better access, but decided to try from the outside. Began digging at it (remembered it was a bear on the Cub, too) but have only managed to get about half of it out. Now it's a mess, and probably too late, I am seeking advice. It looks like it goes on forever! My only consolation is that I have the luxury of having a second PTO if I totally screw this one up!

I don't think I have done any damage...yet!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I had done, but it just keeps going! I almost think it must be two, back to back. I know the old ones were much thicker, and the belt pulley one I got out OK and it was about 3/4" thick. But this one would have to be at least 2" thick. Hmmmmm... I'm leaning toward going back to the other side, but getting that PTO Gear off didn't go very easily, that's why I started "digging". I'll start on it again tomorrow and see how it goes.

I have never dealt with a super A, but on the H, many of the seals were 2 separate seals in a single housing. When you got the seals out you still had a shell that had held them together that needs to be removed. They are really tight.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Yes, we already got a double seal out...guess it was felt and leather? There was a spring with the first. The reason I think we hit a second is that we got the "housing" for the first out, then got a cover plate for the second out and now there is a second spring...with that big ole' housing again! I should reach China by lunchtime!!

I'll just keep digging!

you need to remove the pto gear, remove the shaft from the housing, and then it will come out. its just as John *.?-!.* cub owner said. once you remove doth sections of the seal, you can fold the shell inward with a punch or a screwdriver. fold it in 3 places and remove it.

Thanks ARTC...tomorrow's project (maybe!). I needed to get away from it for a bit, so went out to the "donor" SA and stole its left final drive! I'll either start rebuilding that so it can be swapped with the previously repaired one, or maybe I'll tackle the PTO again. I WILL try removing the gear and shaft. Thanks...
