IH 2424

Can anyone tell me some information about the IH 2424 tractors, please? There is one for sale nearby and after losing out on my potential first Cub two weeks back, this one has me a (little) interested. I need a working tractor, but I sure still like the looks and appeal of a Cub, onward before I digress. I never heard of a 2424, but found they were only made from '64-'67, as a competitor in the small industrial tractor market. This is the 'ugly' IH yellow - I think anything IH should be red, but they didn't ask me. I don't know yet if this one is diesel or gas. It comes with tire chains and some 3-point implements: 2 bottom plow, 5' mower, rear blade, disc. It has the accessories that I'm looking for and some extras from a practical stand point- high/low gears- 8 forward/2 reverse, live PTO & these implements. I still kind of have my heart set on a Cub, but this one would sure meet my practical needs assuming it's in good shape. It probably can't compare to a Cub in antique or any other appeal- only it seems to meet the practical aspects. They want $3,500 which is a little more than I care to spend, but haven't contacted the owners to discuss anything like price, condition, etc. yet. Any advice on value, practical use, suggestions on what signs to avoid or look for to determine its worth? CubFest in Kansas is only three weeks away, so I'm not in a hurry to invest in anything if I don't have to.

There are some hits if you google it, one commented he was told a 2424 was the industrial version of the 424, again, is hear-say. It appears to be more versatile and powerful unit than a Cub, so you may need to get both!

Yes, the 2424 is the industrial version of the 424 (thus the yellow paint). Cubs are great for their intended purpose. But for you, this tractor might be a whole lot better (3-point, standard PTO). The main drawback to old industrial equipment is that it is frequently abused more than old farm equipment. So you really need to look it over to make sure it is in decent shape. Don't look at the paint, look at what is under it. If (and this is a big if) the tractor is decent, the price isn't too far off. Consider that you easily have more than $1,000 in equipment with it (unless it is somebody's home-made junk).

The 424 was a very simple, capable and tough tractor. We have had one on the farm since it was new.

I haven't heard back from the owners yet. I read the ad again and this one is gasolene powered. I can't determine any brands for the implements from the photos, but appear to be factory-made. If it looks and runs OK, and I can beat the price down any, I'm gonna have to paint it red. Once I know how many hours it has, how it's been treated and used, etc. and can see it in person, it'll be easier to make a decision. Thanks for the links and the suggestions.

Similar model on the Craigslist link. When comparing asking prices, add in the implements and their both right in line money-wise. I hope to look at it friday, we're off work that day and I can sneak away to see it easily.
