Farmall Super A, AV, 1939 - 1954

I have started REASSEMBLING my ’48 Super A!! Replaced the rear seals after flattening then resurfacing the retainer plates.  I took the flywheel to a machine shop and had it turned…oooo…looks so purdy! Put the flywheel and clutch back on, then installed the engine with only a few grunts! I had already replaced the throwout bearing and even remembered to grease it a tad before putting the engine on. Having the starter off made it pretty easy to align the shaft plus I used a couple extra long bolts to help with the initial alignment of the engine.  The next large job is to swap the left final drive with the one on the parts SA, since it has been repaired in the past, the spare is better, and I need to replace some seals anyway. THAT should keep me busy for a while, since I am doing all this by myself. Thank goodness for a nice shop to work in and a borrowed hoist!! (There certainly are times where being female strength-wise is a disadvantage) I still have a bit more sandblasting to do of some small items, and numerous repairs to do on some sheet metal (will be getting help with some of that). Also some repair kits to order…Touch Control, tune-up stuff, front wheel stuff, etc. I will probably pull the governor for jollies, especially after reading the recent post about the broken spring. Why not? It’s REALLY easy without ANYTHING attached to the engine!! Dale #2

Update on Bubba 3-15-11 I cleaned up the brake locking bolts and put new jam nuts on them (old nuts above):  I removed the governors from both engines so I could pick the better:  One has a steel thrust sleeve and the other (better condition) has a nylon:   I needed to make a couple gaskets so I could reinstall them. Thanks to Jeff Silvey who reminded me how to do it and provided some BEEEEAAUUUUTIFUL gasket material! Thanks, Jeff!  Tomorrow I will reinstall the governors...they were in great condition after a bit of cleaning. Next item will be swapping the finals...I needed to wait for some muscle help with those! Gave a call to the local IH Dealer, just to find out the cost for a Touch Control rebuild kit. The kit plus valves, etc, that aren't included in the kit, cam to over $200! Anyone know what parts are generally needed for a touch control? The dealer DID say that I could return the extra parts (the ones outside the "kit") that I didn't use. Also, does Steiners (or someone else) have the basic kit for less than the approx $100+ the dealer wants?
Since I have 3 Touch Control Units, I figured it would be a good learning experience to rebuild one; plus a good project, perhaps, for the upcoming VA Cubfest. But...that's a lot of $$ and I DO have a working one (leaks??) to put on Bubba... I just hate to put one on without knowing for SURE that it is not going to leak all over Bubba's new paint job!

BDFinch, You are doing a great job! I am in the process of a total engine overhaul as well. When I removed my governor of my 49SA I found out why the governor was acting up on me, the Thrust sleeve had no bearings left just two washers somebody installed. So, I replaced the thrust sleeve and replaced the spring. All I need to do now is put the governor back on. Pabst

Sounds like you had a good project there, yourself, Pabst! I just removed the oilpan on the "bad" engine...the one I was told had a broken crankshaft. I actually was able to turn it with the handcrank, but when I mounted it to an engine stand (my new toy!) and removed the pan, (and rotated it upside down so I didn't have to crawl under it!!)...sure enough...there was one BIG crack right across the crankshaft. The rest of the engine "looks" OK, so it would probably be a good candidate for a rebuild IF the crankshaft is available and IF it is reasonably priced. (Anyone want to go for it?!) If I find a crankshaft, I will probably do it just for the experience, then probably sell it.

OK, the past week was spent doing mostly little things... Replacing the bushing in the steering gear housing  Filling the hole cut in the instrument panel for an ignition switch    Drilling out a sheared cotter pin   And cleaning up the fuel pump for rebuild   About half the parts have been primed and this next week I am ordering the red paint. Then I plan to finish painting (primer and red) all the parts that are off the tractor, paint the tractor itself, install all the painted parts, and then once it has been reassembled, repaint the entire tractor. That way the areas behind (and blocked by) components will have been painted. Sounds easy, but still quite a few repairs on various parts to go. Just want to get some visual satisfaction! Dale #2

I went to Boss hog's VA Fest, where (although I did NOT have my Cub with me) I was generously helped with my Super A projects. Cecil did TWO carbs:  and then pulled the protesting, STURDILY built seal on my PTO. (Bigdogs' advice of "just keep digging" came to mind!!):   He then went on to helping me with the Final, reinstalling the brake drum:  Mike & Doug helped with the Touch Control (picture double everything in the Cub TC):  Using the tool that Yogie made on site (now I need to make one to overhaul my second TC):  Once I got home, I FINALLY reassembled the PTO after having to use an air chisel to remove the woodruff key in order to get at the bearing:   With help from the forum, I was able to set up the Final in the press to get at that bearing and seal:   And this week I may swap the rebuilt Final for the welded one, install the PTO, and perhaps begin the Hydraulic Pump Overhaul. As soon as I get the rest of the 1000+ parts primed and painted, the REAL reassembly will begin!! Let me know if enough is enough! Guess we all have done these types of projects and just really want to share the trials and tribulations...the frustrations as well as triumphs...with others who can appreciate them...thanks for your support!
