can I use a middlebuster plow on my 154 lo boyI have a 154 lo boy with turf tires and would like to use a middle buster plow to set up a small orchard. Is this feasable? It has a class 1 3 point hitch and a creeper gear. I bought a middle buster plow at central tractor, it fits but I would like to know if anyone has done this before I try it.
Re: can I use a middlebuster plow on my 154 lo boyYou probably wont get enough traction with bare tires, but could put tire chains on and do ok.---these little tractors were not intended to use as farm tractors,---they are just lawn mowers!---If your clutch and driveshaft are good and tight fitting, you can do a test pull of 10 feet or so and tell real quick if you can pull it or not! thanks; sonny
Re: can I use a middlebuster plow on my 154 lo boyThe clutch is not even a consideration when looking at what the weak point of the tractor is. The pin in the driveshaft is designed to go long before the clutch. The engine is only 16-18HP so in most cases, the engine stalls if you try to plow through a big rock.
Put some chains on it and pull away. Use high range if you have a creeper (creeper not engaged). 184 w/ Creeper & 3-Point

Re: can I use a middlebuster plow on my 154 lo boyThe problem is the sloppy fittin splines on the drive shaft that are easily stripped off !---How do I know???---dont ask! thanks; sonny
Re: can I use a middlebuster plow on my 154 lo boyThat's a wear issue, not a design flaw. They fit well when new and wear over the years of use.

Re: can I use a middlebuster plow on my 154 lo boyI use a TSC middle buster on my 154 with Ag tires, no weights, and it does fine in clay and sod. I am not sure how well it would work with turf tires but I would not worry about breaking anything.
Re: can I use a middlebuster plow on my 154 lo boyUnless you have a creeper I wouldn't. I tried it on my 154 and I kept sheering the roll pin. It has the power and the gearing to do it but a dumb clutch set up. I think part of the problem is the shaft I have was made by a machinist and it is not as tight in the pilot bushing as I would like. I've thought about installing another bearing to support the shaft which might help,
Re: can I use a middlebuster plow on my 154 lo boyPresPres, that isn't supposed to be a roll pin. The actual part number is shaped like a roll pin, but it is actually high-strength spring steel rolled up into a cylinder shape. It is much stronger than a typical roll pin. Some people use a grade 8 bolt with a locknut and then grind off the extra bolt so it clears properly. Even these fail after some time.
