Trailer Project

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

Trailer Project

Postby Eugene » Sun Feb 20, 2011 5:36 pm

Current project. Neighbor gave me the trailer. Must have been someone's school project. Springs had been mounted solid and were broken. Axle was way to big for the trailer - home made utilizing two truck steering knuckes and spindles. Some of the original welds will need to be cleaned up and rewelded

Image
Purchased 2000 lb axle set, just over $200- shipping included. Beefing up, widening, the trailers side rails to hold the spring shackles. Out of pocket cost will be some where between $225 and $250-.

Image
Need a small highway capable, easy loading, trailer for hauling loads smaller than the 18 foot tandum axle trailer. Can also tow the trailer with the Cub for farm chores. Trailer is about 4 1/2 feet wide and 7 feet long. Original trailer frame has been shortened for some reason.

Edit: Clean up grammer.

Looks like a great project! I would like to build a small trailer to be towed by the cub for chores and haul a single cub to cubfests. Keep the pictures coming please!

Plan is to use this trailer to haul garden tractors/Cub Cadets - easy loading and unloading. I want to keep the highway load to around 600 or 700 lbs. While a Cub would fit, Cub with weights and implement(s) plus the trailer weight would be at or exceed the suggest axle weigh.

Haven't progressed any further on the trailer. Weather not permitting. We had 16" to 18" of snow. Son use a skidsteer to move snow off the house and garage drives. He had to pile it someplace - on top of the trailer.

Eugene:

Looks good :) I hope you are enjoying the project. Oh.. btw - nice Tombstone :D I think I would agree with your thought to lower the sides and make em about 10" - 12" high as side rails/boards. I would probably add some weld on tie downs while you got the stick out

All of my trailers have the low sides and wished they were taller. Neighbor had one with tall sides and he shortened them and regrets doing it. True, it's harder to load from the sides with tall sides but strapping down taller things it sure helps. My .02$ Grump

Excellent, Eugene! I've been trying to come up with trailer ideas myself.

Trailer is finished except for wiring the lights. Used it Sunday to haul a Cub Cadet about 13 miles. Trailed nicely.

Trying to think back on how many trailers I have built or rebuilt. Guessing 8 or 10 trailers, maybe more. I still have a heavy big boat trailer that I'm not sure what I'm going to do with.

Also have the hoist from a small dump truck. Been planning on building a dump trailer for a couple years.
