New member saying hello

Hi all. My father in law and I just bought a Farmall 100 with a Woods L59 belly mower. Just something to tinker with, but looking forward to learning about it and playing a little. Just ordered a service manual, as it shut off and won't crank. Starter tested good, thinking maybe the switch on top of the starter? Thus the service manual. Shes in decent shape, needs some TLC but ran good and cut nice. We'll get 'er figured out. See y'all on the boards here. -Tim

While technically most of the server applies to Cubs etc., there are some manuals that apply to other Letter Series and Number Series tractors. Some of the electrical ones in the Blue Ribbon Service pages may apply as well. I hope they may be of some help.

Thanks for the welcome! While my father-in-law actually purchased the 100 he is really less than motivated to do anything these days, at 65. I call it laziness ( he lives with us in an in-law quarters downstairs ) but thats a story for another day . So I will be doing the research and PM and such since he has a hard time even climbing up on it. It sits in his garage, which is next to mine, and the starter has been sitting on the workbench for at least 4-5 days now. Its like a cat and mouse game- I wait to see if he gets motivated enough to do something, and when I finally can't take it anymore I just do it myself I asked him yesterday if the hand crank came with it? He did this lol. I wish he would get motivated to at least learn how to surf a forum so he can learn like I'm trying to do. I run heavy equiptment for a living and I'm mechanically inclined to a point, but eager to learn ( I'm only 43). I enjoy a challenge and this looks like it will have some fun involved. I have some co-workers that come from a farming backround and a few own tractors, but most are Green fans so I can pick their brains also. With the rain here all week I probably won't be working and my patience will wear quickly so I'm sure by this time Thurs I will have the starter back in it if he gets the switch and I'll get to testing stuff from there

Check all the battery cable connections. Both ends of both cables! Don't neglect the ground connections. Even slight corrosion can stop a starter under load. Every connection needs to be tight and shiny! Remove the cables and wire brush the connectors and also the surfaces they contact.

Hammer or hand crank....I have started my H with a hand crank,,,though prefer a starter.Yep clean the connections!!!

Well, good news! I "urged" my father-in-law to reinstall the starter since he was the one who removed it and to be sure all the surfaces were free of corrosion. Wah-lah! She fired right up! Thanks Bigdog for your advice. Now he's mad that he spent $40 to have the starter bench-tested. On to the next project, find out where the gas tank is leaking. Then the fouled-up plug in the top of the PTO case, the PTO seal...the list goes on, all minor stuff hopefully!

Yes sir you can call me Chumley, its a nickname from work. Or you can call me Tim, anything but late for supper Next is a new V-belt for the deck, it is shot and keeps jumping off the pulleys, then figure out why the starter grinds sometimes. Maybe a weak engagement spring? Just having fun with it!
