Re: Starting the Reassembly of my '48 Super A
Unfortunately, the shop is closed on weekends. I guess I need the time off, though! I'm feeling a bit weak, since I went out yesterday and hocked my soul for a new Acura MDX. I have had my '92 Ford Explorer since new...20 years is pretty good for a modern machine!! I could probably make it last as long as my Cub and SA, but vehicles today are not QUITE as simple as those of the 40's and 50's!!! Also, parts are not cheap or as available!
Now I just need to find a nice (inexpensive, but reliable) trailer that the MDX can haul with either my SA or Cub. Anyone have one? I could get it anywhere between here and the Tug, and make use of it hauling for the Cub Express!

Re: Starting the Reassembly of my '48 Super A
So, last week was a good one for getting things rolling. Looks like my '48 SA (Bubba) is finally turning the right color...at least most of him!
First, I decided to further disassemble the front axle, even though I had already primed it. Wanted to replace the clamp bolts (one broke as I was removing it, so it was a good idea!):
Long ago I was told that the prep for painting was the majority of the work, and that is absolutely the truth! Disassembly, cleaning, sandblasting, repairing, wiping with thinner, wiping with a tack cloth, then you FINALLY get to paint. And then you have to spend tons of time cleaning the paint gun!
Whoever posted about JB Weld, I thank you soooo much! It has been great. First I used it to fill the old grooves in the handcrank:
Then I finished up the steering wheel (the light gray is the filler). At the end, I actually wiped a thin layer all around it with my finger to fill the tiny hairline cracks:
I also decided to fill some small dents in the airfilter and a rather large crease in the tube where someone had hit it and bent it:
Now I begin replacing seals, gaskets, etc and reassebling sub-assemblies so that as soon as the "fuselage" is painted, I can start putting the puzzle back together!

PS Please let me know if this post is too long.

Outstanding work.. looks really good
I only have one other observation.... most people don't have birch veneer cabinets in their homes and you got em in your shop I think that is sooooo cool Not only that but you clear coated em... is it nitro-cellulose or catalytic lacquers? Wow for both the cabinets and the SA

Very nice job, gonna look great when finished! I know you said you wanted to paint all the places that you could not get to after assembley, but don't paint the ground path back to the battery! It would be a shame to have to disassemble major parts of the tractor to find electrical continunity.

Re: Starting the Reassembly of my '48 Super A
Work continues almost every day from about 9am til they close at 6pm!! Of course, that doesn't mean it is always productive! In fact, yesterday I was assembling the front wheels, hubs to rims, when I suddenly realized my freshly painted rims, with mounted new tires, were painted the wrong color...red instead of silver! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggggghh! And I have no one to blame but me! I am the one who painted them. Now I must mask off the tire stems and tires so I can repaint the rims (after I remove the nice red hubs!).
Rudi, that bookcase is actually from the UNC (University of North Carolina) Surplus Store, where they sell off all sorts of items from computers to file cabinets to bookcases. I think it cost me $30, along with two $5 office chairs. It is perfect for storing parts...I really need a couple more!
And Danovercash, I do understand what you are saying about ground paths, so before I paint the main tractor (which was possibly going to happen tomorrow) what areas specifically do I need to keep bare? In other words, what uses the tractor for ground? It will certainly be easier to mask off contact points rather than try to sand them later. I appreciate your input.
I had my welding class tonight, so am too tired to download photos, but I will have some up in the next day or so. Have a good night!

Dale,
Excellent 'flow out' on that Iron Guard paint. I love to see the work of a good painter, especially someone who is not afraid to 'lay it on' with the second wet coat. Great work - you are going to really have something to admire and be proud of when you are all done.

Dale,
I desperately need new front tires so, I painted the rims red. Later to realize they should have been painted silver.
continue the GREAT work!

Re: Starting the Reassembly of my '48 Super A
Pabst, I guess I was thinking Cub when I so carefully sandblasted the front rims (after having the old tires removed), primed and painted, then returned them to the shop to have the new tires mounted. I could have spit when I realized my mistake...! Oh well, at least it was a decent paint job (albeit practice!)
Since I have only had one lesson now on MIG welding, I had a friend build up the bolts that hold the spidles onto the front axles. Then I ground them back down for a snug fit, so there was no lateral slop....worked great! I reassembled the front axle, minus the tire/rim assemblies, since it would be too heavy for me to move around. Won't get the tractor painted until the first of next week since they were late delivering the paint today and I am taking tomorrow off to look at trailers.
Also got the hedlights put together with new 12v bulbs...ooooooo, so pretty, and I DID remember to keep the ground intact for them to work. Haven't hooked them up to a battery but I did check them for continuity with a meter.
I'll post some photos tomorrow. Dale F

BD, don't know the exact particulars, but make sure everything has a good electrical path back to the battery, both lights and ignition, starter too. Also wires supplying power need clean connections. Everything uses the chassis/block for ground.

I appreciate the heads up, and will definitely (TRY to) make sure I "keep the path open"! At least I did remember that the lights used the chassis ground.

It's been so long since I added to this post, that I almost gave up on trying to find where I left off! I won't bore you with all the step-by-step photos, though I must have taken hundreds, just to make sure I could get it back together! I will only give some highlights:
LOTS OF SANDING!

FINALLY GETTING THAT PINK PRIMER COVERED!
