the letter w

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Fri Jul 22, 2011 4:35 pm

as some have seen, I replaced my new Dell with a new Hp 64 bit, and am quite happy with it. It has one peculiarity though in that anytime there is a lower case w in the text of the forum the center of the w is washed out. Upper case W is ok, and everything is normal in a header, and in the text of other forums, the only time it shows is in the text of this forum. I have tried a different monitor, and also using the high resolution connection. It happens whether using Windows or Netscape. It is a very minor inconvenience, and will not make me return the pc, but I was wondering if anyone had seen anything like it before.

It's not your computer John.

Make sure the resolution of your video card matches your monitors "native" resolution.

Just goes to prove the saying, there is no smarta$$ like an old smarta$$

I did a checking today, and drivers are current, so I deleted the video adapter and let it run using the CGA adapter, and it did not have the problem, but when I let it reload the Intel Hd graphics adapter, the problem was back.
also, I noticed that if I zoom in one step it is ok. Oh well, it is not a bad enough problem to worry about, I just thought it an odd characteristic. If I zoom out one step it is normal also. One of those things that I will never know the why, and I hate those, I always have to know why.

John:

Go on line to HP.com and then to Support and then to Live Advisor I think it is called. They need to know about the glitch if they don't and if they do they may have the fix. I have always liked HP support .. especially their Live Advisor ? excellent tech support. Only other one I know that has this is Toshiba :D

Sorry Darrell, I thought you were referring to it being me, not the computer. I am a smarta$$ at times and assume (yeah, I know) others to be also.

As I said earlier, make sure your monitor is set for it's native resolution for clear sharp text and images -- this is very important on LCD monitors. Second, there is a thing called font substitutions. phpBB uses the following fonts on the board: "Trebuchet MS", Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, Sans-serif, your browser will substitute a font that it thinks is closest to one of these if it is not installed. That could be a possible problem too...

One other thing, are you using the increased font setting in Windows? That may also cause distortion. Other than that, I'm at a loss -- maybe check your glasses prescription ;)

Now that I look at mine, so do I...except my upper case W is washed out, not the lower case.

Resolution is set to the recommendation for the monitor.
Same problem whether using IE or firefox.
not sure about the increased font setting, everything is pretty much as it came from Box.
Spent an hour+ with Hp support, he had no solution, but is going to keep on doing some research and will let me know if he finds anything.
