I will soon be swapping out engines in the M that I bought from Dan R. and am seeking advice from those who have done this before.
What is the best way to remove the engine, Remove radiator and pull engine forward or remove front rails ?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Re: Swapping out M engines ?????
Like in a cub, the engine is part of the frame, the rails are implement mounts.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I don't think so. The front bolster attaches to the front of the rails. The detail I can't remember is whether you can pull the engine while leaving the engine rear support in place. The rear support is a flat plate and I think it is sandwiched between the bell housing and the rails.

I can remember help dad remove engines from M's in his shop bck in the day. I'm pretty sure we had to remove the entire front bolster to have enough room to get the engine out.

The frame rails need to be removed. That rear engine plate has to come off with the engine because the flywheel is behind it.

We leave the rails on the bolster easier to move around.
Block the engine up forward of the Hydraulic pump , the only thing holding the engine after the rails are off are 2- 1/ 2 -13 bolts and the dowels
The Plate is bolted on to the rear of the engine so you have to go on the backside of the plate towards the rear of the tractor to break it off the clutch tube. I put the 5/8 bolts back in the rail holes , leaving room for the engine to pop free of the clutch HSG , to keep things steady while I break the engine from the clucth hsg. We did not have a chain falls just a tractor with a bucket .
It is still a process.
Pm me with any hang ups be glad to assist in any situation you may have, we recently did our M
and just finished an engne removal on our H
very similar just Bigger
