oil leak on main shaft coming out of transmission

Postby bookman51 » Wed Aug 17, 2011 12:29 pm

Looks like I have an oil leak on the main shaft coming out of the transmission of my 1969 Cub 154. The oil gets on the mower belt and throws oil all over. Not a terrible leak. How difficult is it to fix it??? Looks like a challenge to me!!! I assume there is an oil seal in there somewhere.

Thanks in advance.

No Boss. If it's coming out of the back of the tractor where the drive belt pulley attaches, I believe he's talking about the PTO shaft. It's likely that the transmission is over full and leaking out the seal on the PTO shaft. Double check the transmission level, and if you have not changed it in a while, now is a good time. It's possible that there is moisture/water/condensation in the transmission, and has built up over the years, raising the transmission fluid level. If it's too high, it will run out the PTO shaft seal.

Bookman,
The main shaft does have an oil seal. Can remove the clutch/pressure plate flywheel, then unbolt the cap for the main shaft seal/retainer.
Also, the lower countershaft has a cap with a gasket.
Good Luck

Yes, I think it is mostly coming from the lower counter shaft. I have am now sure what I have to do get in there and change the gasket.

Also, my cltuch continues to give me fits. I have adjusted the pedal and still it does not seem to want to disengage so I can shift gears. Is this a sign of a) I need a new clutch or b) I need to adjust the clutch different? What baffles me is that does not seem to be consistent, but today I had to stop trying to use it because it got so bad. Perhaps it gets worse the more I use the tractor...... Help! :lost:

Hi Bookman,
Make sure the linkages between the pedal to the throw out bearing does not have a lot of slop. This gets a lot of wear over the years. Especially the connection at the yolk that holds the throw out bearing. If you have slop here, redrill the hole in the yolk and connecting rod a size larger and use a larger bolt/pin.
Good Luck

Another issue to watch on the clutch, is not really the clutch, but actually the clutch brake. Often times, the inertia of the the flywheel, drive shaft, etc., turning, keeps the clutch turning even after you have pressed the pedal down. This is why they used a clutch brake on the number series tractors. If it's not adjusted correctly, the drivetrain will keep on turning with the clutch pedal depressed, making it seem like the clutch is not working.

I have the same problem on my junk 185,---trans. input shaft spewing oil onto the mower belt and has rendered it useless and wont cut grass an inch high,---also now pto belts are slipping and I have them "breaking tight"---still slipping,---if I get all the belts to hold for a few seconds the $260 clutch pack slips!---(got it so tight I have to use big pipe wrench to snap it over center)---that was the last time it was ever used! unit is now looking for a new home, and I am back to mowing with a Deere 262 garden tractor and a woods C-80 on the 706 for the heavy stuff! good luck on yours!!!! thanks; sonny
