Got a question

I have always been told to not plow under potato vines, squash vines, tomato stalks, cucumber vines, watermelon vines, etc. because they could cause some kind of soil borne disease. So I don't. I pull them up and carry them out of the garden and throw them into the edge of the woods. What do others do with the above vines?

If you are picking up the vines, for fungus or blight control, throwing them in the woods near the garden won't help. the vines should be bagged and remved from the property. Throwing them nearby still leaves fungus spores, etc., where the wind can carry them to the garden. Composting won't destroy them, unless it is fst, high temperature composting. Ed

Potato vines I usually plow under after harvest... course there isn't much left as they dry out rather quickly. Corn stalks, tomatoes and such we usually toss in the trailer and I use it for mulch alongside the road, brook, pond etc., wherever I want to add depth. Works very nicely.

We never had any problems by just plowing them under at a depth of 16 inches, so in the spring they are about half way to china! LOL!!!----and the ground is nice and clean on top! thanks; sonny

I just till the vines under. But, I rotate crop locations. I have 2 medium small plots and then 2 tiny plots.

I too plow everything under, and rotate the crop from season to season

rotate your crops plow under your stalks to let them rot and plant a green manure for compost or add compost in the spring
