Sometimes you just need a bigger hammer!

Postby Scrivet » Sun Oct 02, 2011 7:54 pm

Was working on replacing the seat post on Cub #3 today. Number 3 has yet to make it's forum debut, I bought it back in July but it's a little camera shy, I think because it's grill is missing  . Number 3 sat outside for a few years and I have been working through a few problems as a result. One was the seat post was rusted stuck solid. I removed the stop block and have been soaking with everything possible, hammering, prying, and jacking. At one point "John *.?-!.* cub owner" and I had a bar in it and tried to twist it with one of us pushing and the other pulling. (And YES we were both trying to get it to move the SAME direction at the same time). I even stood in the seat an jumped up and down on it. I bet that looked goofy, good thing nobody knows I did that  ! Well I finally gave up and bought a replacement seat post assembly and I was going to change it out today. Got one of the mounting bolts out but the other one was rusted and it rounded off. My set of "rounded off bolt removers" didn't have one that big. I just felt like smacking something! The closest thing was the seat post and there was a splitting maul in the shed. So I gave it a whack, and I felt better, then I gave it a little harder whack, and I felt even better. Hey, this is kind of therapeutic, so I gave it a really good whack and it moved! So I keep whacking it good and it keeps going down a little each time. Does anyone remember I have the stop block out while I am driving the seat post down and compressing the spring :?: ? Compressed spring and NO stop, hummmm. That thought occurred to me at about three quarters of the way down. "Luckily" the post was rusty enough to not let go and launch into outer space, I had to twist it back and forth to get it to come up. Cleaned it up and gave it a good greasing. Put it all back together and sat on the seat grinning from ear to ear, bouncing up and down like a six year old at a slumber party. :{_}: :{_}: :{_}: :{_}: :{_}: :{_}: :{_}:

Dang! All those times I held back from taking a really bigger hammer to it, or wrapping it around a tree, or smashing it, Just to think, it might have worked and I wouldn't have a build up.
Good going, proud it seat works. It feels good to complete mission impossible -- I think!!!

I was waiting for the axle housing to brake right under the seat post.
Glad it worked out.
I removed a couple seat posts once after the owner gave up by using a really good air punch.

Just curious, are Navy words worse than any other branch of the military ?
I did 20 years in the Air Force, have aquired a colorful vocabulary.
