How much free play (before the clutch engages) should the clutch have on a 184 low boy? The old clutch that was on mine for years since I got it never had much free play at all and I had tried to adjust it several times to the proper clearance. It went out a month or two ago and I replaced the clutch and adjusted the clearance but, it still only has what seems like very little travel on the pedal before the clutch engages. I'd say maybe 1/2 inch at most. Is this normal?
The reason I ask is that I was reading a post on here the other day (maybe the cub forum) regarding adjusting the release fingers on the pressure plate. I was mowing today and got to thinking about that clearance issue and the thread I had read. Could the fingers being out of adjustment be related to the clearance at all? The old clutch was way worn out on one side and looked good on the other. The setting the proper clearance distance on the old clutch was always a bugger because I didn't get the same clearance on each finger. Not being as bright as some on here (just plain not knowing what was what with these clutches) I didn't know the fingers could even be adjusted. Just thought they were torqued on at the factory to stay forever. Please let me know what you think.

On the 184 I have not found a way to "adjust" the clutch fingers. The fingers are bolted through the pressure plate to the flywheel. The bolts are to be tight but I am not certain of the torque required.
If you are getting uneven wear, then something is out of alignment. Either then engine is dog-legged in the frame or the transmission spacers are allowing for movement. I suppose it is also possible that the frame is bent as well.
You asked about the free-play adjustment of the clutch. The throwout bearing must not be touching the clutch fingers when the clutch is out. I think the specification is 0.1" gap. When the clutch is depressed, the clutch must be fully disengaged.
With a new clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing Yes, this leaves the clutch pedal engaging within 1/2" to 1" of the pedal throw from fully depressed. As things wear, the clutch engages later (higher) in the pedal throw.

Thank you for the response outdoors4ever. I don't think this clutch is off like the other was but, I will check by taking some feeler gage readings at different points to be sure. If this is the right free play, then it is what it is.
