FORDSON SUPER MAJOR help please-NOW WITH PHOTO ALBUM LINK !!

Postby Marion(57 Loboy) » Mon Jun 20, 2005 11:54 pm

A good friend of mine just aquired a Fordson Super Major.

Tractor model # 712

Serial# 7923

Hoe 723 series

Component# I9-299

Serial # I0I3

It has a huge loader and bucket but we cannot find a # on it anywhere.

There are levers on it that he doesn't know what they do...would like to have a idea before just giving them a yank!

It has a 4cyl diesel engine; 2 wheel drive; expandable front axle.

There appears to be two clutches???

Anyone knowing Anything about this tractor loader hoe, please post. It seems it was made in Europe? .....not sure.

Please look through both pages of photos, if you know what the levers are for, refer to the photo number with description! Thanks!! :))

The fordsons were made in England, and would have a Ford industrial diesel, a 220 if memeory serves.

By 2 clutches, do you mean a 2 stage clutch, or 2 seperate pedals/levers?

It has one clutch pedal on the left, and linkage to two clutches that operate at the same time when you press on it.

One clutch is high on the case and the other one low.

There is also a lever on the left just ahed of the clutch pedal that has linkage to some sort of cylinder at the very bottom of the case. ???

Marion,, it's been a couple of years since I've been into a Fordson Major, but the 2 linkages from the pedal would likely be for the clutch, and a clutch-brake to aid in shifting. I don't remember the details of the workings in the clutch housing now, but the 2 stage clutch would work from a single TOB.
The lever that runs down to the cylinder under the tranny case is the PTO lever.

The pto lever you mentioned....is it a simple engage-disengage??

What about the lever under the seat then? We thought that was the pto lever...

There's the draft control on the right side of the seat; then there's a lever about 5" long under the seat.....

I'll have to run over there and take a few pics and post them...too hard to describe/visualize I think.

This may sound stupid but might the lever under the seat be for the seat forward/backward adjustment?.

Also a lot of times depending on how the hydraulics are plumbed there is a push/pull knob on a converter block that separates the hoe from the loader bucket to make them work independantly.

Johnbron,

The seat is not adjustable in any way. Thanks though!

In picture 1 I see a lift cylinder for the loader and the PS cylinder.
pic 3 is the drag link from the steering box to the control valve (internal) on the PS cylinder
#4, The 2 linkages seem to be one, the clutch pedal hooks to a arm that runs the linkage on to the TOB shaft through the clutch housing (I think).
#5 TOB shaft
#8 would be the lever for the original starter which would have had a mechanical "solonoid". The lever engaged the drive into the ring gear and closed a contact to power the starter.
#9 the end of the starter lever that conected to the mechanical solonoid
#14 that is the engage/disengage for the belt pulley, not the PTO like I said earlier,, sorry about that!

Good pictures, and a pretty cool machine. Them ol' backhoes are a pile of fun!!
