Tree-mendous Day

Many of you who have attended the Bash recall the big tree in the front yard that looked as though it was waiting for the perfect car or truck to fall on. Well, one day while pulling in the drive Rosie said "The big tree fell". Hey, she was right! I had cut all the limbs from it a few years back, but never got around to dropping the trunk. I don't have to do it now.

It's somewhat large and took up some room in the yard, so today was the day to move it out of there.


After grabbing the Dually Cub and the Sears/Hercules/or-what-ever-it-is trailer I tossed in my trusty 30 year old Homelite.


Rosie and I had said our good-byes earlier in the week so it was time to get to work.


I figured I would get the little stuff first.


And then I decided to tackle the big end for awhile.


From the looks of the big hole it's easy to see why it was dead.


Being hollow (the tree, not me) made it easier to cut the big end in half so I could move the pieces.


After awhile I found that if I pulled that cord on the side of the engine the cutting got easier. Man, I used to wear out my arms cutting this way.


Got it cut and now to load. The little Sears/Hercules/or-what-ever-it-is trailer sure is handy for this type of work.


I ended up with four loads like this.


Now it's time for the final clean up. That old chunk of wood sure left a mess


Cleaned up, loaded and ready to head to the house.


I ended up with a load of bark and rotted pieces that will be tossed in the fire pit with brush from other projects.


Nothing left but the mound of saw dust and dirt that was inside the tree.

I was going to asked how often you had to sharpen the chain, but using your first method....it probably stayed sharp for a while. I remember the "Homelite" name, but haven't seen one around for ages. Can you still get parts for it? Looks like it got the job done.

I have two of these. One is in the shop because it is hard to start. I very seldom have problems with them. The chains are like any other saw, it depends on what you get into. As far as parts availability, I have no idea. Mine have never needed extensive surgery so i am hoping for the best.

That is a new saw. I still use a blue & white homelite that dad bought used in the 60's and a little red XL that we bought new in 1976

Looks like a good job with some fun seat time. Most of my leaves blew back in the field this year. I used the cub & trailer yesterday to clean up where they were hidden from the wind.

Barnyard you are amazing. I know you're a funny guy and everything- but that 8th picture down has movement ! How the heck did you do that ?

Rosie had taken two pictures in succession. I had just happend to move the saw when the second one was snapped. When I saw how close the two pix were I put them through the animation software I have. Basically it is the two photos overlaying each other and playing over and over much like cartoons are made.
