Farmall M behind a 1/2 ton pick-up

I'm looking at a M with loaded rear tires,rear weights & bolt-on 3 point hitch,I'M thinking to much even with my tandem axle trailer. Other opinions please? I can get this puppy for 1000.00 but if I can't pull it not a whole lot of good.

Thats my way of thinking as well,But I'm wanting to bring it back and haul it to shows and stuff. Not much use in buying something cheap thats gonna require a MORE!! expensive way to haul it around.Don't want to be a wreck looking for some place to happen.

Just to state the obvious, once you get it home you can dump the ballast. I don't understand why people want to haul a half ton of tire solution back and forth to shows anyway.

I think an M starts at about 5,000# then goes up as equipment is added. That isn't necessarily out of bounds for a half ton truck, depending on how the truck is equiped and if you have an appropriate trailer with good brakes. I'd use an equalizing hitch unless it was a pretty short trip on decent roads where I could keep the speed down.

I agree with Jim, lose the fluid. I took the wheel weights off mine too...no point in totin' that 300# either. We tow our '51 M all the time with my wifes ' 08 F150, which has all the factory towing options. It's actually a little more pleasant ride than my ol' 97 F350.

The truck would handle it, but what is the size and capacity of the trailer?

99 Ram1500 ext.cab 4x4 with towing pkg. Trailer is a 16 ft. a little over 8ft wide used to haul bobcat with backhoe trencher and bucket. I'm wandering being as tall as this rascal is how wabble it will be, I pulled a John Deere 50, I knew that sucker was back there.

You'll definitely know its back there! The JD 50 will be dang near as heavy as the Farmall M, the M my have it by a few hundred pounds even after you lose the fluid and "undress" it.

Trailer have brakes on both axles?

Don't get me wrong, with my wifes F150 it tows smoother, largely due to the automatic transmisson and lower gear ratio than my F350, it still however can leave you with a feeling that the tail is waggin' the dog, or at least could wag the dog. You don't get that feeling with the 1 ton. I pulled the M all the way to Raleigh NC last spring with the wifes truck and it was an easy trip, got about 12 MPG. Still better than my F350...empty.

I pulled a Super M from Sidney, Ohio to Florida. F250 with trailer shown below. Got kidded a bit about that "big ole trailer" but it was a nice ride. I think the ride was smoother loaded than with the empty trailer. Just make sure you have good brakes on the trailer, you will need them.

The biggest problem I had was parking this rig at Barnyard's Bash.

Yeah, you kept fiddling with his trailer wiring harness to distract him, but he never would take his eyes off that "M".

Could not help but smile when I saw this picture. There stands Billy along with his dad, looks like the stories sure are flying around. Pretty sure I am sitting on the back corner of that trailer behind Big Dog. That was shortly before we fixed the trailer lights.
