Some Thing Different??

Postby tst » Sat Feb 04, 2012 9:05 pm

I was rebuilding a PTO shaft today and it had a Sickle Bar pulley on it, after I pulled the pulley I was surprised by what I found, The shaft was not splined but a straight shaft with a keyway, the pulley was a normal 4.5" pulley with IH #s on it, the tractor is a 49, any one come across one of these before?

Several years ago YTMAG used to sell replacement keyed pto shafts. I considered buying one but never did.

As a matter of fact, Yes. At last years Pinkneyville, IL Threshermen show I saw this Cub with a few interesting things. Spark arrestor, step, rear seat with hand grips, and the "funny" PTO pulley. Don't remember the owners name and I didn't take a pic of the tag.

The #s on the Pulley are 451356R2, so we know for sure this is made by IH, it has a an IH logo in it also

The part number for the Cub-22 mower drive pulley. Somebody bored it out and cut a keyway.

Seems like a lot of work to do that, the PTO shaft is the bearing staked to the shaft style so I doubt thathe shaft was made on the outside

My guess is that a new end was turned and welded onto the aft end of the shaft to replace damaged splines on the original.

The pinch bolt is 3/8" which is normal, If someone chopped and welded that end on the shaft it is the neatest job i have seen, I had the shaft out for bearing/seal replacement and could not see any sign of modification, if some one bored the pulley as Jim suggested you would think the sides of that casting would have been real thin after cutting away the splines, I compared it to a pull i had sitting here and the casting on the outside is the same, if some one modified it they were real pros

If they had the tools to bore out the pulley and mill the keyway, they certainly could have turned out a complete new PTO shaft.

Not sure what the deal is with that particular setup, but around 20 years ago, before this site, and all the sources now available I was needing a new pto shaft. The local dealer said they were no longer available from IH, but he could get me an aftermarket shaft that had a key way rather than a spline in it. I declined on the different shaft

I know I'm digging up an old post but my cub also has the keyed shaft PTO. Works good for me cause I can use collars and pulleys of my choice on my custom leaf vacuum I'm trying to build. It is strange I can't find any info on why there is a keyed shaft.
