VanSickle Paint

I did a search of the forums, and I do see some people using VanSickle paint on their Cubs. This is what to local ag supply store carries, and was just curious of what people thought of their IH Red and IH Blue? I plan to brush paint, and maybe use a rattle can clear coat over the hood and such. Any thoughts on the durability of this paint? What kind of primers do people use?

I like it but I spray everything so I dont know how brushing will be my only complaint is it takes a long time to dry but it looks good for the money I painted my 450 with it.

I've had good luck w/Wal-Mart self etching primer and then rattle can ValSpar IH Red from Farm & Fleet! My '59 has been painted 5 years and still looks decent I think. It is a woking tractor. Dusty B

Hey Wamoo...I have used Van Sickle 460 Blue on my #22 Cub Sickle Bar Mower. I use it with a good metal etch primer underneath. Van Sickle Blue has a very distinctive odor that you'll recognize right away . Ag Specialties sells their IH Blue for less money than Van Sickle does (but it's really Van Sickle paint) . I'm doing my Cub 152 mid-mount disc in rattle cans right now. It works very well and drys (slowly) to a long, durable, glossy shine that resists fading very nicely ...'Country'

I have used the Van sickle both in blue and red, and have on occasion brushed it on. It is fairy good paint, but there are a couple of things to pay attention to. If left out in the sun a lot, the red will fade faster than IH paint does, and it is very slow to completely cure. If you intend to clear coat it you may need to wait longer than usual. The blue does pretty good, but I did learn that even after it had cured several months you cannot use a strong degreaser such as Castrol super Klean on it. It does not remove the paint, but does take out the color.

I compared the Ag Specialties/Van Sickle Blue to a number of different "IH Blue" paints and some original parts I have with Factory blue paint. I think the VanSickle is the closet representation. The original parts don't have the same shine, but they must be at least 50 years old! I love their rattle can gray primer if you can find it. As for the red, I would use the IH red. Tough to beat that paint, although I never used anyone else's red. The blue has a big thumbs up from me. I used to get it from Hardware World on-line but they dropped it for Valspar. I was very disappointed and have not found a place that offers it on-line.

I got my Van Sickle blue from C&G. It's been years but I haven't hit the bottom of the can yet.

Ha Ha! It's surprising that a town like Astoria doesn't have a Ace!

The VanSickle paint was at Big R in Colville, WA, about 14 miles from our farm. There is also an Ace there as well as Chewelah, 6 miles south.
