Need help with 154 Cub Lo Boy

Postby Rmcdaniel » Fri Feb 10, 2012 2:22 pm

I have a Cub Lo Boy 154, with front end loader, 1st...The handle you pull up to start the PTO take-off won't start it unless you pull up real hard and hold it, use to pull up and work, 2nd....Can i hook the Front end loader in the pump that runs off the motor that works the rear 3 point hitch?...then i would not have to worry bout the PTO thats works the rear pump, it only works the loader, the other pump works the 3 point hitch & what would be the mowing deck if i had it on the Tractor....If the clutch dicks was wore out would cause the pto not to work wt out pull hard up on it and hold it.....If you guys need more info please ask,,,,,i really need some help on this Thanks

Sounds like you need to adjust and/or rebuild the PTO clutch system. This is fairly common, but a bit complicated to do. There are some good write-ups on here about adjusting the PTO, and the service manual provides some really good instruction too. I would plan on a re-build of the PTO clutch, as by the time they wear to the point that they will not stay engaged, the clutches are shot. Could just be an adjustment, but I would plan for a total rebuild.

No, I would not try to run the FEL off of the tractors hydraulic system. It does not have the capacity for the loader. It "can" be done, but everyone that I have ever talked to with the tractor hydraulics running the loader said that it is way too slow and under powered for the loader to operate usefully. The PTO driven pump is what most folks try to go to.

Another option that some talk about is to try to mount the PTO driven pump up off of the side of the engine and run it off of a belt on the flywheel pulley. The disadvantage to this is that the hydraulic pump will always be running whenever the engine is running, and it is an added drag on the engine when trying to start it. Having said that, the PTO driven hydraulic pump is again a much better option.

I would suggest just adjusting/rebuilding the PTO clutch and using it as-is.

Welcome to the Forum!
Before I would tear into the steering box, check to make sure that the spindles are well greased and the linkages are not froze up.

Unfortunately, the steering on the 154 is manual, and with the FEL on the tractor, it's going to be really hard to steer. As others have said, make sure the steering system is mechanically in good shape, everything greased as it should be and moving freely when jacked up off the ground.

Counter weight on the back of the tractor will help. If you have the narrow 4-12 tires, moving to the wider, turf tires will also help, just by spreading out the weight on more surface area. Other than counter weight and keeping the tires pumped up really high and spreading out the weight, there's not much else to do.

The handle you pull up to start the PTO take-off won't start it unless you pull up real hard and hold it, use to pull up and work,

Check the spring that holds the PTO in place.
I'll also recommend Hamilton Bob.

Most people use the 3-rib tires on the front when using a loader. The wider turf tires are harder to steer with (though they do provide more floatation). Trailer tires also work well to help with the steering.

Welcome to the forum! On the bottom of the gearbox, there should be a grease zirk. Make sure you service that good. It should help a little. 8)

Not sure what the GPM is for the loader pump so I don't know if the normal pump would be much slower.

My limited experience with the pto is that it likely just needs to be adjusted. I would take it off, inspect the bearings, inspect the plates. If all good then just adjust and you will be good to go. If the friction discs have a spiral pattern then they are good, if they are worn smooth then it may be time to replace.

On your PTO Unit, also check that your 2 spring plates are still concave and act as a spring. If not, they will not hold the unit engaged, but the unit probably just needs to be adjusted. The service manual will give you the info you need to adjust.
