Wasp....

Postby Steve H » Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:31 pm

Use to be every now and then a wasp would get in the house. No big deal really. Just track it down and kill it. However this year We've already killed over 2 doz of these little suckers. I've been all around the outside of the house looking for nests, high and low and have found none. There's always nests in the barn but I keep em pretty much killed out there. I'm really concerned for my 9 month old daughter as majority of em have been killed on 2nd floor which is floor she and the 3 other kids sleep. Any one have any ideas for me?? Thought I'd call a exterminator and may have to soon!

I would be a lot more concerned about exposing the little one to any of the persistent neurotoxins they use for wasps than the wasps. I get a few every year. Just swatted the first tonight. I have no idea where they are getting in. I have gone over this one corner of the room with a fine tooth comb and can't see and entry point. A shop vac works great if you find the cluster. Just don't open it up too soon and whatever you do don't spay anything like carb cleaner inside with the motor running!

I'm afraid with the lack of cold weather to kiil everything off this year we're really in for it with pests this summer.
Keep an eye around the windows, that seems to be where they gather the most when they're indoors around here.

True about the spray around the baby. Was just brainstorming as to how to keep em out of the house. Guess it is almost impossible to keep em totaly out.
As far as being a bad summer for pests: it never really froze here long enough for me to move manure with skid steer. Had to go rent a track cat the other day because mine would only get stuck. Man the mosquitoes(sp) ran me off of that thing afgter I got started. I thought the exhaust would keep em away but nope. Ate me up! Also was cleaning fences out where creek goes under them. After a while felt summin crawling on me. It was a tick. In the hour and a half I was doing that had 7 ticks on me and 1 was already latched on. It's gonna be a battle all summer long against pests on evrything from are bodies to are crops I'm afraid. I'm going to be fighting fly's from here to eternity!

I just heard a report for this area that ticks will be really bad. Mild winter but not many acorns meant a collapse of the White-footed Deermouse- the preferred host for deer ticks. A big population of ticks will be looking for other food sources. Time to tape the pant legs or tuck them into your socks.

for some reason ticks and chiggers do not seem to like me. Maybe I should try bottling my sweat and selling it on eBay as a natural repellant.

On the more serious side, I have found something that keeps wasps and mud daubers out of my shed, no chemicals, etc. It could be used around entries of the home to discourage them.

there are 2 or 3 companies selling these fake hornets nests, and they DO work. Wasps, mud daubers, hornets, etc. are very territorial and will not come close to one of these. I was having a problem with mud daubers in my 32x40 shed, until I hung one high up about 4 or 5 feet inside each of the main doors. In the 3 years since, I occasionally find a mud nest on the door facing, but nothing else inside the entire shed, and considering how loose the sliding doors fit, and the spacing around the eaves, etc. this is amazing. You can get them from a couple different companies, but I have talked to people that hang them on porches, under eaves, etc. and they all say they work.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Thanks a lot John!! This is the exact reason I made the post, I knew for a fact that someone on here would have a possible solution for me. I'll try and find them on web when I get home. Sure sounds like its worth a try. Thanks again!

Check with your local farm/garden supply and hardware stores. simply hang them from eaves of house, porch etc. should do the trick without having to put inside. One word of warning, they look lifelike enough that many people are a little uneasy around them till they realize what they are.

Found em from a company called Contech. $7.99 each. Bought 10 of em. Gonna hang some around house and barn. Hope it will run off the wood borer bees to. I don't mind them but they scare the heck out of my 8 and 6 yr old daughters when they feed the chickens. And yes I could see the fact that if I hang one around the entry door that people may not wanna come in. On second thought............may be a good way to keep unwanted relatives away!!! . Thanks again for the tip!!!

Edit: for any one curious they're called the Waspinator.
