Advice Request - How Do I Ship a Tractor?

Postby Bigschuss » Thu Apr 12, 2012 7:49 am

Hey guys,

Thinking pretty seriously about purchasing a tractor that is now in Missouri. I just have NO IDEA how I would go about having it hauled to Northwest Mass, and I guess I am looking for advice and suggestions about how to go about this. Of the 4 or 5 Cubs and the few JD's I have ever bought, they have all been in New England and I picked them up myself. This one I can't get to myself.

Can anybody at least get me started? Oh, and it's a John Deere M....don't hate me. :D

Thanks in advance,
Blair

A thread on the subject: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=68821&p=558873&hilit=shipping#p558873

Also, I know tractordad bought and had a high/wide Cub shipped from Kansas to MA. You might PM him. See thread here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49852&hilit=+kansas

Hope this helps.

Out of curiosity, where is it located? If it is being sold by a place in Warrenton that uses the name Fence Row Tractors on Ebay be careful, they are not very forthcoming about any problems or shortcomings.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Thanks Denny and Stanton for the tips. I just sent a PM to tractordad.

Hi John,

Here is a link to the Ebay listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/110858646618?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619

This isn't the place you mentioned is it?

Looks like a great little tractor. I was looking for a 40, but this will work. And I love the planter.

That listing says:
Item location: Mantachie, MS, United States

MS is Mississippi, not Missouri.

As you know, it now has an alternator for the 12 volts. The 3-point is not original and quality of the conversions is quite variable, ranging from quite good to terrible. The seat is not original. The original seat had a forward-facing light mounted on an arm on the right side for illuminating the front cultivators and to provide two lights facing forward. Mounting and demounting the tractor with the original seat probably was easier than with the one on it now. Some would consider mounting that tractor to be more difficult than a Cub. With the 3-point changeover, the original cultivators (if you could find a set) will not work, neither front nor back. With the 3-point, the original belt pulley equipment, if so equipped, cannot be used. You noticed the unrepaired hood dents?
The model 40 uses the same engine block with several internal differences for more power and engine life and has 3-point as original equipment. Connecting rod bearing life should be longer in the 40 for a couple of reasons. If the 3-point is a feature you really want, I would consider getting a model 40.
Luck favors those who are prepared

Thanks John. Funny you mention that, because I am looking at one closer to home this weekend that is being sold by an old timer who stated that is the sole reason he is selling it...just can't get on and off like he used to.

Thanks so much Bus Driver for taking the time to write. Good stuff! I am looking for a working tractor, not so much a show piece, so the dents and seat (ugly as all get out) didn't bother me that much. I am going to take your advice about the specs you mentioned about the 40 and hold out for one. My original goal was to buy a 40. After reading your comments, I am going to stick with that plan and forget the M.

Thanks again,
Blair
