Have mowed 6 or 7 times with the new 185- 6 speed!---LOVE the thing! does great in L-3 for the most part ---have been in L-2---even L-1 a few tough places, but can trim inch close to stuff!----my other 185 just runs way too fast to be of any use to me!--so does the 154, so I will probably get rid of them!
One problem I do have is that the woods mower under it gouges the rear tires and the front swivel wheels get into the front tires when backing up!---if the mower was to be moved forward to the next hole,--tires would barely clear BUT, then the front of the mower would be into the front tires all the time!---Still dont have a cure figured out for this other than take the swivel wheels off!---they do help hold the mower so I hate to remove them---could probably set them straight and weld the suckers solid!
Has anybody else had this problem with their woods mower on a 154--185 ? thanks; sonny
My 3160, (which I always thought was a copy of a Woods), had lugs/stops made onto the caster body that only let the wheels swivel maybe 30* each way. One was wore out and swiveled 360. I'll have to look tonight and see where the stops actually were.
My 185 with a Woods mower does the same thing. I just raise the deck enough for the guide wheels to clear the ground when I back up. That way the guide wheels don't turn around and hit the front wheels. A little bit of a nuisance but since I don't back up much it's easy to do.
If you have a woods mower and use the wide turf tires, you must use wheel spacers. With the rear of the Woods mower V shaped, the spacing out of the tires prevents rubbing. I have seen a couple numbered cubs that had a woods mower with turf tires without spacers, and the mower was forced too far forward, front wheels removed, and they needed to use a longer mule belt.
Woods made a spacer for the application- they are 3/4 or 1 inch.

Its the 59 lb woods and no tabs ever been on the front wheels.----my 3160 on the other 185 have some worn off tabs,-- BUT they dont stop until they get into the front tires on it either, but since I cant use it ,(runs too fast in first gear and only 3 speed) I just tolerate it (for now).
I think I could squeeze the mower forward 1 more hole and loosen up the drive belt to make up the difference in length but since its 1 long belt I hate to mess with it!---it does mow and belt stays on, but it sure is hard on them giddy fat rear tires!---Was even going to switch tires from other 185 (the good skinny ones) but these hold on the road ditch bank without the mower turning over (have turned the skinny tire dude over twice trying to mow the ditch)---its in front of the house or I wouldnt mess with it.
Spacers might be rather costly, I might be able to cut some out with the torch,---still have to come up with longer lug bolts so that idea is not good!LOL!
Which hole is your mounting brackets/push arms in?---mine may not be in the right set!---I know that sucker is a close fit under there! LOL! thanks; sonny
I have a pair of those spacers for the front wheels that I am not using and would be willing to part with. They are about 1/2" thick (roughly).
I always wondered why someone would need 1/2" on the front.
I do think the key is to weld some material to the bottom of the arm so that the tires will only swivel the 30 degrees.
