Dad's Farmall Regular & why I missed the Bash

Postby poppy1948 » Mon May 16, 2011 1:13 pm

Not sure where to post this. It could be in farm life, but since it is Farmall related, here goes.

I wanted to take dad's '48 cub to the BarnyardBash, but my siblings scheduled a reunion at my sister's house in Zanesville, OH with the purpose of going through some old family photos and documents.

I had always assumed that dad had farmed with horses and mules until they moved to the small farm where I was born and bought the cub. As it turns out, his first tractor was a Farmall Regular as far as I can determine from the included pic.

Image

This is my dad and older sister and brother sitting on the Farmall that was sold along with the farm in October 1945. I was born right after they moved to the smaller farm in January 1946. I can't be sure when the Farmall was purchased, but it was sometime after 1940, because they did use horses to farm with and sold them with the farm.

Here is part of the sales document that lists everything that went with the farm.

There's no way to determine what happened to the Regular, but now I'm thinking that I need to find one for my collection. :?:

Great documentation! I'm sure you spent your time where you should have. But you did miss a good time. Your drawbar is in the Big Old Barn at Bill's.

I reckon I would have skipped my own CubFest to tend to that kind of business. Just let me know when you plan to be around the area and I will get your drawbar out. So far it hasn't been lost in the shuffle. :D

That is fantastic ! I love family history stuff especially when it pertains to agriculture ! I'd be working on a nice scrap book or else a nice wall collauge (sp?) of pictures.

God Bless you man. You were right where you were supposed to be. There will be another bash but family comes first.

Re: Dad's Farmall Regular & and my "new" one, update

Postby poppy-1948 » Thu Jun 14, 2012 11:51 am

Not exactly an update to this thread, but it seemed like a good place to post my latest purchase. It's an early 1930 Farmall Regular pretty close to the production date of my dad's first tractor. Based on the seat mounting, dad's Regular was probably built between April 1930 and early 1931.

With the wide tread and wide tires this puppy is 98" wide so I'm renting a gooseneck trailer and picking it up Saturday in New Washington, OH.

There will be no steel wheels in my future even though that's what dad used when he farmed. I like the parade ready rubber.

Well I kind of bought a pig in a poke since I made an impulse bid in the last couple of hours of the auction; didn't have a chance to ask questions and was surprised I won it. Fortunately the seller didn't want a down payment and included a money back guarantee. The plan is to talk to him Sat. morning after he starts it and then if it drives itself onto the trailer and I think it is original enough I will bring it home. :D

Steel wheels are cool but they are a pain in the butt. Here is my '29 (with #1668 DX gasoline manifold).

ricky, very nice '29. I don't expect to have mine that shiny. Should I be worried about the seat spring breaking? The reason I could date Dad's Regular is because of the cast iron seat bracket that replaced the leaf spring unless of couse his had been upgraded. :?:

Thanks poppy. Regarding the seat, I have no idea. There might be others here who will chime in and have more knowledge regarding that issue.
