184 tranny troubleMy first post: My 184 kept slipping out of 1st gear while doing some heavy cutting. It eventually would not go into 1st or 3rd. I've been told the problem might be bent shifter forks. I've opened it up and now am looking at something I have no clue about. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong, nothing broken or cracked (that I can see.) What would be my visual clue of what might be the problem. (I installed a clutch previously and it worked well in all gears, doing regular type of mowing.) Thanks for you input. ~~SpedHd

Re: 184 tranny troubleWelcome to the Forum. I can't help you either, but if you don't get a response, contact HamiltonBobsCubs (sponsor at the bottom of the page). He deals exclusively in the numbered Cubs and is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Re: 184 tranny troubleWell, I can't help a lot either as I have never owned a Numbered Series Cub. I do have the Operator's Manual - International Cub-184 Lo-Boy (Jen Sales). As far as the Service Manuals .. so far the only manual I have online is the IH-38 1974 Edition Complete which I think may be of use. At least I hope so ...it is primarily for the 154 but I think the 154 and 184 are similar.

Re: 184 tranny troubleThere seems to be an excessive amount of "can't help ya" going around. I'll give it a stab...
The slipping out of first and reverse does sound like a bent shift fork. The fork gets wider and allows the gears to slip out. Some people take them out and weld them back to the right shape. When mine did this I just got a used fork from HamiltonBobsCubs and that fixed the issue. If it slips long enough, it can wear off the corner of the gears. (check this) Start by replacing the shift fork. There is a how-to on this site for this repair. Be very careful not to lose the poppet balls. A manual would be very beneficial When putting it back together, make sure both forks (and the shifter) are in neutral. Also, inspect the shifter ball for wear. It should pivot at the plate and the ball should be round. If not, this may be your issue. Also, you may want to additionally check the driveshaft. There is a keyway on each side of the u-joint. Make sure these are not worn or sheared off. 184 w/ Creeper & 3-Point

Re: 184 tranny troubleAs I said, I never had a Numbered Series Cub .... but if a 184 is similar to a 154 ... then possibly IH-38 1974 Edition Complete
![]() the forks may be very similar to the forks in a standard cub. If so then this might be of use as well : Tranny Repair 101 Confusion breeds Discussion which breeds Knowledge which breeds Confidence which breeds Friendship

Re: 184 tranny troubleRudi, That's exactly the page he's going to need. The transmission portion is the same between the 154 and 184. (The clutch and flywheel portion is different)

Re: 184 tranny troubleNot to hijack your thread, but I started experiencing the same symptoms on my 154 as I cut my lawn this evening. Is there a post, sticky note, or whatever that tells how to inspect the shifting forks, and the poppet balls? Like which plate to access it through, or if I need to drain and split the tranny and engine, et cetera?
Thanks for the link to the manual. Since I do have a 154, I'm sure it will come in handy, if not for this repair, for the next or the next.
Re: 184 tranny trouble
Yup, paragraph 42 in the links above. To inspect the poppet balls you have to remove the shifter plate and the forks. When looking at the forks cracks should be pretty obvious once the forks are cleaned if they are dirty. Poppet balls - be careful you don't lose them. Tranny Repair 101 would be helpful even though it isn't exactly the same physically, principles are the same. You should not have to split the tractor to service the forks and poppet balls to my mind, but then again as I said before I don't own a Numbered Series Cub so .......................... Re: 184 tranny troubleNo split is necessary. Remove the tunnel cover, toolbox, fenders, and sheet metal.
Remove top cover of transmission and shifter. Now you can look around some. 184 w/ Creeper & 3-Point

Re: 184 tranny troubleWell thank ya gentlemen. Its nice knowing ahead of time what I am in for.
As far as the manual referenced, I downloaded it when you suggested it previously, however perusing it I thought it more towards the IH Loboy and less so the numbered Loboys. But maybe that was just me. Either way, thanks, I sincerely appreciate all your assistance. And I'm sure I'll be back for more. Thanks for your time.
Re: 184 tranny trouble
Nope.. the manual is divided into two primary sections. The first 18 pages are for the Numbered Lo-Boys. The Farmall Cub section begins on page 19. It is the one service manual that I have available, unfortunately it is lacking in depth. I would suggest using the TC-131 Parts Catalog Revision 8 in conjunction with the IH-38 1974 Edition Complete service manual. The visual references may be of help. Re: 184 tranny troubleThanks I hadn't noticed the split and was on page 40 something or other. I'll be ripping into it tomorrow morning before the heat & humidity kick in. I hope.
Thanks yet again.
Re: 184 tranny troubleWell I tore into my tractor, aiming for the aforementioned plate on the top of the tranny. When I got it off, and had the opportunity to check out the shifter forks, everything seemed okay. My only real question concerns the two 3/8", or whatever they are, retaining bolts, connecting the shifter forks to those rods running fore and aft in the tranny. What is/are the torque specs for those two bolts? If they were loose would that also lead to the symptoms described?
