Prayers for Gary & Kristy Bailey

Postby Dusti Snider » Tue Jul 03, 2012 2:12 pm

Please keep fellow cub member Gary Bailey and his wife Kristy in your prayers. Gary was loading his new Kubota tractor in the street in front of his house yesterday when the truck, trailer and tractor took off down the street. Kristy tried to jump in the truck and in the process fractured the L1 vertebrae in her back. Gary came off the tractor when in flipped. The whole rig crashed into the neighbors house three doors down. Gary is banged up and sore, and currently at a Roanoke Virginia hospital with Kristy where she'll undergo surgery in the morning.

According to Gary he was in his regular loading spot, truck in park, park brake set, and scotched. Next thing he knew it was headed down hill sliding the tires...

Kristy came through her surgery yesterday well. They ended up having to make only minimal repairs to her L1 vertebrae. Gary is on the mend, brusied and banged and sore. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Our prayers are with both of them. I too have had an experience with trailer surfing, but it was only for a few feet and no injuries or damage. It does scare the daylights out of you though.

I have been really tied up with work for the past while and haven't had time to post on the forum, but thanks for the prayers. Thanks for the updates Dusti. I guess this has been about the scariest thing that I've went through, total shock and "freeze" once I realized what was going on. I thank God that no one was injured worse or killed. My boys were out in the area and luckily no one was in the house, the truck went through the block foundation and busted a few cinder blocks out according to neighbors.

I thought I was doing everything right, in hindsight using a 4x4 wood chock on pavement probably wasn't the best choice, but in the past week alone I had done the exact same thing (loading/unloading) in the exact same spot 3 or 4 times, along with always loading/unloading everything else in that spot. I just don't know what to say, when the rear wheels were on the ramp and I felt and saw the truck starting to be pushed and smoke coming from the tires, I just froze. My neighbor and wife tried to open the door and get in the truck, but without having the keys there's not much that they could have done anyway I guess. I do remember the truck hitting the house and the trailer starting to turn, but then I guess from there I was in the air flying around. Again, just really thankful for the most part it was all material things.

Kristy had a fractured L1 vertebrae was fixed with screws and rods to the above and below vertebrae... I offered to get some grade 8 bolts from Tractor Supply, but the doctors didn't care too much for that one. They did say she should have a 100% recovery, but it will be a long road (6 months+).

Gary, I have been there, done that, and understand the slow motion. I am glad all will be well with time.

I was hauling a new 580 backhoe with a gmc top kick single axle dump truck. Started up hill on dirt road and it started to rain. In the middle of dog leg I lost traction. Tried to back down hill but gravity would not let the trailer track. i had to unload the hoe, as I was blocking the road.

chocked the truck, unchained the hoe and started to back off trailer. Weight of hoe lifted the front of trailer and back of truck up over the block, and the truck and trailer with the backhoe on it and me in it headed down the hill backwards

The hoe finally made it over the ramps and they dug in and it stopped. End of ramp was 8" from a 500' drop littered with huge pine trees.

Shaking like a leaf, I had to unload the hoe off the side of the trailer.

Sorry, your tragedy just brought back of old memories

I also had the same thing happen loading my 580 Case backhoe, fortunately my friend was able to Lock down all of the truck and trailer brakes and stop the vehicles from moving forward. It is very scary, I'm very glad that you and the wife are going to be ok, prayers from VA.

Glad to see your sense o' humor made it out unscathed!

My wife Sherri had two of them done about 6 years ago, fractured them helping me out on a jobsite...I thought she was just laying in the snow watching me run the hoe...what an idiot...

Yesterday was the first day they got Kristy up, she walked really well, but just scared to trust her body, I think. She's naturally still in a lot of pain, but now from the surgery, not the injury. Still no word on when they will let her go home. The Dr. wants her to go to a rehab hospital for a week then start physical therapy, but that will be up to the insurance. We all really appreciate all the prayers and thoughts. I can't believe the number of people who have similar stories from trailers and equipment of various sizes.

On a positive note (haha) yesterday the main surgeon came in, Dr. Simonds and saw my IH shirt, he proceeded to ask if I had any, I told him 'yes' a '49 Cub and a few IH CCs. Well, he proceeded to whip out his iPhone and showed me his collection of 23 IH tractors ranging from a '47 Cub to a Super M, to a IH 1066 and all in between. Nice to know she's in good hands!!! And it was the first time Kristy's "oh great, just what he needs...." came out.
