Howdy

I recently obtained a 52(which I believe to be) Farmall Cub, in good condition. It has been setting in someones garage for a couple of years and is currently not running, although it was. I just ordered a carb rebuild kit, and a gas tank sealer. It has a J4 magneto, and I am not getting any spark, Im not sure yet if i want to try and fix the mag or put a reg. dist. in it(not sure which ones are interchangeable). Someone started a 12 volt conversion on it, and never finished it. I'm open to sugestions on it. Thanks

Im located in Bryan/College Station Texas, and this is my first classic tractor. I also have a 2012 Kubota l3200.

Welcome to this great forum. I think I would try and fix the mag but that's me. It may just need points or a coil.
This is the introduce yourself section. Post the question on the main forum and you will get a lot of suggestions.
Check out TM parts an the bottom of the page. Also do a search of best coil for a mag. There a few that are better than others. You can also use a external coil that is cheaper.

Congratulations! If you haven't done so already, please select the link at the top of the page (dark blue lettering/light blue background) reading "Manuals". There, you can select your Cub's appropriate owner's manual and service manuals for reference. Many of your questions can be answered there.

Also, next to the "Manuals" link is the "CBoK" link that takes you to the Cub Book of Knowledge. There, please select any of the catagories, but "In the Barn" will give you many, many articles from members doing everything from routine maintenance to customizing.

Lastly, you can always do a search in the Farmall Cub section of this forum to discover answers previously given to similar issues. For example, a search for the word "spark" reveals 4,642 hits: search.php?keywords=no+spark&fid%5B0%5D=1

Again, great to have you on the forum. Take some time and explore, if you haven't already done so--you'll be amazed! If you don't find what you're looking for, post a question in the Farmall Cub section of this forum. :D

If you are not getting a spark I suggest that you start a basic diagnostic . Check to see if you have spark at the magneto - take the coil wire from the top of the mag off at the distributor cap, hold it with something insulated, then hand crank to see if you get a spark after you hear the mag click. If no spark, investigate the internal coil, coil wire to see if either are compromised. If you have spark, then I would then check to see if you have spark at the plugs. Replace the coil to dist wire then check each spark plug to see if there is spark. If not then you will have to check the points, condensor and maybe the rotor. You can find this procedure in the Service Manuals at the links above or as Stanton explained. I am no electrical guru but this is the tests I always do in a no start situation with a Mag.

I am also not a fan of 12v conversions. I do not think that they are always the answer or even if they are the answer. I prefer to leave my mag equipped Cubs as just that and in fact have undone previous PO conversions to 12v on my '47. Usually 12v conversions are done to cover up basic problems that could be resolved by doing proper basic maintenance.
