Need Some Help With Garden Vegetable ID?

Postby Bigschuss » Sun Jul 29, 2012 4:09 pm

Hey guys...

Could I get some help identifying a mystery plant that was growing in my garden this year? Not sure how the heck it got there. It was supposed to be a pumpkin, but it turned into this HUGE squash/zucchuini/gourd looking thing that completely took over our cucumbers and summer squash. I had to pull it, as it was just overtaking everything.

One, what is it? And two, is it edible?

Thanks in advance.
Blair

A possible cross between two simular plants from last year, had a simular thing happen several years ago, but the squash bugs took care of it for me, LOL! Pumpkin and squash cross maybe.

Good one! :D

Thanks for the replies gents...all possibilities I guess? Never even considered a hybrid. It does look something like the squash in Don's link.

Well, I removed 2 plants you can see on the side of the lawn there. I left one in that wasn't hurting anything.

Thanks for the help.

I actually planted some of those. It's a type of gourd, but it didn't take over my garden. I told my kids that they were Dinosaur eggs.
I planted them from a pack of gourd mix seeds.
