strange air condioning problem.

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Wed Aug 01, 2012 9:57 pm

Mom's air conditioner in her trailer quit this afternoon, only 99 degrees outside. She has a digital Honewell thermostat, and the display on it was blank. I figured we had lost power to the t'stat, maybe a bad transformer or tripped breaker. When I finally got smart enough to figure out problem it was dead batteries in the thermostat. never saw one that would do that before. Most of the time the batteries are just to store settings in case of power failure, but on this one the batteries actually power the thermostat.

My geothermal system has a programmable one, that will run without batteries. If you loose power with the batteries removed it will revert to default programming, but will operate when power is restored. For my use the programmable is a lot of unneeded hassle since we are here all the time, and unless you are gone for several days changing the settings actually waste electric. I have never been able to find a plain digital that will work with my geothermal system though due to the change over capabilities if the system fails and you need to revert to resistance heating.
