Are the prices on the 154's going up lately?

Postby BigBill » Sat Sep 01, 2012 11:02 am

I was just browsing ebay and seen the average $1,000 price on the 154's and some $4,500 prices but the $14,500 price tag on the completely restored int154 just about floored me. She is a really purdy one but the $14,500 is out of sight. I feel comfortable with a price of a restored int154 at around $3,500 is decent if it has the 60" mower with it. "IF" i was looking for a restored 154.

when I was looking for a lo boy a few months ago , everyone wanted more than what the tractors were worth, for some reason real POS LO BOYS I found were starting around 1500....I ended up paying 2300 for a 184 with creeper and 3 point and it had a fresh paint job and soon after I got it, it needed a clutch and motor needed a overhaul, all from a seller who claimed it needed nothing, personally I didn't feel the tractor was worth more than 1500 but for some reason Flea bay sellers think different with these things

I don't think you got a bad deal considering the options.
The 3-point is easily worth $700-$800 (higher if you also have the diverter valve) and the creeper is easily a $600-$800 option. The only other option on the tractor is the combination rear light - a very small value option. You can find them cheaper - just not with all the toys.

Regarding the overhaul required...
The fact is, these tractors are 32 - 36 years old. Most were sold to large estates and counties for mowing roadways. Both tasks involve lots of hours of use. The fact that they are just now up for their first major rebuild is amazing. I am encouraged knowing that they can be bored to 0.040 without a problem. That leaves room for 2-3 overhauls.
If we are getting 25-30 years per major overhaul, there is a lot of life left in these machines when we do a good job rebuilding and maintaining them.

I did purchase my third int154 for $1,700. Its a late 60's int154 and it came with new good year 8.3x24 ag's on the rear, wheel weights, tire chains, snow plow(IH) and the creeper tranny. She sounded awesome when i heard it for the first time. I haven't touched it yet since i purchased it. It plows snow every year plus dirt too all summer when i need it. The PTO checks out ok too. I feel i paid a tad too much but on the other hand she runs awesome. My int154 with the 3260 mower deck with the 3pt hitch and the new engine I paid only $800 for it. I rebuilt the PTO with new bearings from hamilton bobs cubs and i need to assemble it soon. I did rebuild the 3260 deck with new bearings and seals too. The rebuilt engine from the PO runs and sounds great.

The #ed lo boys do not sell for much at all here. I think tractors in general are down in value along with about anything else.

For some reason ALL brands/sizes of the old tractors are not selling for much around here either! (AC wc,wd.wd-45/c,ca,etc all for around 450 to 600,---ride and drive---used to sell for 2 grand!---last 6 months or so the value has hit rock bottom because nobody wants 60 year old junk! thanks;sonny

I've had my 3rd int154 for 3 or 4 years now. I've seen 154's for $1,000+++++ that looked worse than the non running parts 154 i purchased for $400. Its silly when the PO's or sellers think they have gold. I made an offer on two cub cadets with attachments that looked like they were run into the ground for $650. The guy refused. He snapped at me he could get more on ebay, I said thanks for showing them to me and goodbye. I month later he showed up on my door step trying to get me to buy them again. I refused since he was so snappy at me.

Hey BigBill,
I'm new here so "what do I know?" I've been looking at lo boys for years and just got my own for less than 1000.00 but it doesn't have a 3 point hitch. Boy was I surprised when I checked the ebay prices. The one I was looking at sold for 680.00. Buying the specific 3 point hitch parts on ebay adds up to even more so I am still looking. Does anyone know of an aftermarket 3 point that will fit the lo boy numbered series?

Prices can vary. The restored ones i seen were $3,500 so anything less or a lot less can be a bargain with a little elbow grease from us fixing it up. I got lucky my 1st int154 has a rebuilt engine and my fcub for $1,500 has a rebuilt engine and 4 new ires and tubes with new back rims. I can see the new gaskets and silicone sealer on them. I paid a tad too much for my 3rd int154 but she is running years later with no problems. I baby the clutch, it slips in hi range pushing snow but in low range on the creeper it doesn't slip. If i run the tractor alot the clutch gets warm and won't slip. I have a new flywheel, clutch assembly for it already. Having 3 int154's i been buying up parts too. I about have a whole 154 on the shelf in parts now. When i get to restoring them i should need very little in parts. But i want to go thru them anyway so i know there right.
