oil pressure question

Postby ad356 » Mon Sep 24, 2012 11:12 am

my cub has good oil pressure but it takes a little while for it to come up. is this normal. it probably takes 5-10 seconds to get full oil pressure and i just want to make sure this is normal and that i dont have to replace my oil pump; with how easy these tractors have access to oil pan if i thought it was weak i would replace it. are these engines built anything like a car engine with the oil pump in the oil pan?

Totally normal.

The oil pump is not in the pan, it is on the back side of the motor. There is a screen and suction tube in the pan.

Nothing to worry bout.

Normal. Reason the oil pressure doesn't come up immediately, as in a car, is that the oil in the oil filter housing drains back into the crankcase when the engine is shut off. When engine starts it takes a few moments for the oil pump to fill the oil filter housing, bring up oil pressure.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I suggest letting the motor idle until the pressure comes up. Don't hit the starter and immediately take off before the pressure comes up.

All 3 of my cubs, one of which was rebuilt last year take 15 to 20 seconds to build oil pressure. If you look at the diagrams in the service manual, all the oil galleries have to be filled, and enough oil in the filter housing before the gauge reads any pressure. That is a low volume, low pressure pump, and it takes a little while.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
