Sickle Mower

I have a 1952 Cub and I recently bought a used sickle mower. When I pick up the end of the mower to put it in the full up position perpendicular to the ground, the blade goes down toward the ground. Is there something missing that should prevent it from doing that?

Thanks Jim. I have the mower manual. In the additional threads, they mentioned the Winfield Ear. Is there a picture or drawing that clearly points out the Winfield Ear? Additionally, what is the width of the PTO belt? I am using a wide v belt but it keeps jumping off. I'm going to try a more narrow one tomorrow. Thanks again.

The Cub-22 mower takes a B size belt.

If the belt keeps jumping off, you've got one of three issues:

1. Belt cords are broken. Replace belt.
2. Alignment is WAY off. It should be perfectly straight up and down.
3. Belt is way too loose. Tighten the belt.

Thanks Matt. The alignment is definitely off. The two pulleys are definitely not aligned straight up and down. The PTO pulley is exactly the width of the pulley forward of the mower pulley. Either the PTO pulley has to go rearward to align over the mower pulley or the mower pulley has to go forward to align over the PTO pulley. The big question is how is that done?

I haven't any good pictures of the pegs. In the first image, illustrations 3 and 4 show one peg on the back side. In the second image, reference 11 is the part with the other peg, although it doesn't show in the illustration. When you have the cutter bar up, those pegs should run into each other to keep the knife up.

What do you have for a PTO pulley? The original has quite an offset.

Chuck, if I can figure out how to post a picture, I will take one tomorrow and post it. It has spines where you can move it in a out but it appears that it is out as far as it will go.

It should have a hole for a carter key. Carter key also goes thru hole in pto shaft

When the carter key is removed, can the PTO pulley be extended rearward to align directly over the mower pulley?

If you have carter key installed and alignment is not correct, problem isn't with the pto pulley. If you have the right pulley. Maybe the flywheel shaft is shimmed too much?

Where are the flywheel shims and will taking them out allow for the movement equal to the width of the mower pulley?

If you have a full pulley width of misalignment, the small stack of shims isn't going to be enough to fix it. Take close look at the Cub-22 pictures on the TM Tractor Parts web site to see where you may be off kilter. Here are direct links to 2 pages. By the way, the shims are on the mower flywheel shaft at each end, between the mounting brackets and the pulley or flywheel.
