Radiator Gasket

Postby Pabst » Sun Nov 11, 2012 8:37 pm

I am in the process of installing a new radiator with new cork gasket from TM. My question is with the cork gasket, I was going to put a bead of silicon caulk on the gasket is this necessary or will encounter problems later. Thanks!

Some will tell you no- the gasket is engineered. I coat my gaskets with a thin film of Ultra Gray by rubbing it in with my thumb and forefinger to get an even, thin film over the entire surface. With gloves, of course- it gets a little messy. It never leaks.

Definately make sure it is a thin coat. You don't want it to goop into the radiator

I use a very thin coat of RTV on both sides of the gasket. Just a film.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

As mentioned, there are many types of gasket sealants that will work, I use "Indian Head" brand shellac based sealant from NAPA for all of my gaskets on a cub tractor, I apply it to both metal surfaces on either side of the gasket, works great.

I have been using the aviation gasket sealer as recommended by my local cub tech.

and nary a drop from any gasket.

He's probably worked on on as many cubs as Boss, so his advice usually gets full consideration from me. Wish I would have asked him about that sealer before I did the oil pan on my '63.....
