recent bar project

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

recent bar project

Postby cub47 » Fri Nov 30, 2012 9:01 pm

My used cub parts take most of my time, but this is my other "hobby":

New bar in St. Louis, MO. I handmade all items (countertops also). Made from hard maple.

I wish I had one this nice in my own house Bob. I always have to explain to my wife that she is not a paying customer, so our own personal work comes last....that does not always go over so well. 8)

WOW!, now that is some impressive work. No wonder you have been busy. That looks like a basement get-a-way?

Brian:

It has been that way for us for 30 years. I slowly have been making inroads on that, but it still takes a lot of time. Even though I have been retired for a number of years now, health has taken over the customer aspect and as usual, a cabinetmaker's family like a shoemaker's never has shoes or a finished house.

One thing I have learned and hope I can pass on is that we can't always focus on the paying customer. We have to focus on the one we say goodnight to as well, that relationship is far more important than any paying customer. I know, IIJIMHO but this is based on almost 6 decades of breathing and 5 decades in the furniture/cabinet industry.

I mix my own stain in house w/ a stain mixing station so it is a custom color. It comes in very handy when like in this case I was matching a stain color on a nearby oak staircase.

Nice work Brian!! I am also curious as to what kind of stain did you use. Is it a paint stain, one of them died stains. I curently use Old Masters stains and from time to time I use Minwax. I like about 4 minwax colors as of now. I do mix a few stain colors with the colors I have on hand but do not have the knowledge of doing it myself.

I did a bar project a few years back and did a Died Alkalied Stain on it. 2 coats and no wiping. I liked that stain.

I will include a few pics.

nice looking bar Jason! The stain system I use is alkyd based. Dries in 10 minutes at 70 degrees, I normally mix the stain formulation so that only one coat is needed.

I will use Minwax on occasion, but normally only on projects like staircases where extended dry time is needed. The oil based formulation is pretty forgiving.

One benefit of my stain mixing system is I have mix schedules from the manufacturer that tells me how to mix colors to match all Minwax, Sherwin Williams, and ML Campbell colors. Works great when you only need very small amounts and do not have to buy a quart or gallon at a time. Everything is weighed by grams on a digital scale.
