Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?Ralph's website used to have an audio clip that I swore was a Farmall M with a straight pipe, but it was a Cub.
My '67 sounds like a well-tuned V8. There's no Farmall "crack" to the exhaust note like Ralph's. So I bought this '53 thinking that with a vertical exhaust Cub it would sound more like a Farmall, and I'm quite disappointed. What's the secret to getting the Farmall sound out of a Cub?
Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?There isn't. They're supposed to sound that way.
You can sneak up on someone with a well-tuned Cub. I have seen some that the whine from the touch control was louder than the engine! Al "12 volt conversions are for quitters"

Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?That surely is the truth Al. A well tuned Cub is pretty quiet - the loudest noise that comes from Ellie is the rattling of the rain cap
I do have a 17" straight pipe with no muffler. I like that sound a lot better. Some may agree, some may not, however it is personal preference - I like the straight pipe Confusion breeds Discussion which breeds Knowledge which breeds Confidence which breeds Friendship

Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?Few audio recordings and playbacks accurately reflect live sound quality. Flathead engines burble, it is the nature of the beast.

Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?I felt the sound on Ralph's was a Model A Ford with the spark retarded.
Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?When Lildog rolled Smilin' Bob the manifold broke at the exhaust location leaving about a 2" diameter opening. We test ran the engine before changing the manifold to see if there were other problems. It sounded quite impressive with that gaping hole for an exhaust.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. My wife says I don't listen to her. - - - - - - - - Or something like that! http://www.cubtug.com
Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?I still remember the carnival rides at the county fair when they had individual power units on each ride . There was an assortment of IH- Case- A/C and Wisconsans all putting out individual tones . With anywhere from 10 to 15 rides all runnin it was cool to pick out the IH sounding like dads H , and the Cases sounding like his VAC model. And the wisconsins sounding like John Pucketts dads hay baler lol.
Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?I think this guy tried to get a different sound out of his.
Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?I bought one of these years ago from Steiner when they first opened
![]() Providing they didn't change anything inside, it has a deeper throaty sound than normal exhausts. Rick When I told my dad I've been misplacing things and doing stupid stuff----His reply---"It only gets better"
Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?Yes, Rick's does sound nice. I will be putting one on my loader Cub.

Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?At the end of Barnyard's video CI in Motion you can see and hear Larry G's cub plowing. It is a sweet running & sounding tractor. The video is also worth watching again.

Many times I've read/heard people describe Cubs as running "like a sewinig machine." That's not too far off. Stanton

Re: Getting that "Farmall" sound from a Cub?The first time I ever went to the SE Old Thresher's Reunion in Denton I saw a slick and I mean slick JD 50 running. I say "saw" because you just about couldn't hear it run. I don't know what the owner had done to it but it sure ran smooth and quiet.
I have never been a big straight pipe fan. To each his own I guess but the correct muffler compliments the tractor's appearance and I had rather hear it purr than bellow. Al "12 volt conversions are for quitters"
