Farmall Cubs on American Pickers

When I posted this thread I really was really concentrating on the Lo-Boy that I spotted. Wasn't trying to start a discussion on the various merits of Reality Shows. Just wanted to point out that Cubs can be seen in a lot of these programs including Canadian Pickers. I know I saw an A on CP a few weeks ago so I keep me eye peeled.

But since the discussion has started there is very little that isn't staged/scripted/fiction or even biased historical documentaries. Even shows that are supposed to be historical/based on historical fact are indeed scripted even if it is simply shown from a specific perspective. Very few shows are truly unbiased, don't care where they are produced/filmed etc...

However, I do enjoy them including Ice Road Truckers and it's two spin-offs, Ice Pilots (which is great but really scripted) which brings back a lot of memories for me as I spent 3 years in Inuvik and traveled to a lot of them areas in the north over the years. Pawn Stars, Storage Wars and SW Texas is a giggle at times and of course American Restoration. I like a lot of what Rick does - some of those pieces are amazing and there is a certain amount of craftsmanship involved as many of us already know. Having been involved in restoring antiques for all of my life I know what the real world prices are on some of some of these things -- and the prices he seems to command -- well that is a different reality that is for sure. Now it has been almost 32 years since I last did an install for casework in the casino's in Vegas - but like they say -- everything is bigger/better in Vegas and I guess those prices too. Is it realistic ? Not in my book.

But then again I wouldn't be taking anything to Rick, I would be doing it myself so the prices are a non-issue for me.

I will still be looking for Cubs on Pickers and enjoying all the finds that they pick through/over. Some of those items are really cool

the only shows I really enjoy now are like on the Science Channel "how's it made" and those types of shows. I could sit around all day and watch how cereal, tires, fire hydrants and the such are made! haha. But unfortunately during the winter about all I get to watch is Nick, Jr. and whatever a 3 yr old and 7 yr old watch, so staged reality shows are 50x better than Yo Gabba Gabba!!!!

Yes, "How it's Made", "Factory Made" and "How They Do It" are great shows? I watch a lot of programs on Science. Surprisingly, my wife's 7 yr. old grand son is totally into "How it's Made" and will watch it over cartoons anytime. I'm real proud of him! The manufacture of the simplest items can be totally fascinating, such as the episode on making tooth picks. I would have never guessed they were made that way.

gcbailey, I totally understand. Disney Jr. all day, every day. BTW, has anyone seen "Mickey and Donald had a farm"? Interesting tractor. Sometimes I can get Ethan to watch Classic tractor fever or one of the other simular programs on RFD-TV. Mike S. From Swissconson had his Cubs featured on one episode.

well, I did watch about 4 episodes of Pickers yesterday, and a person has to realize that these are setup. I doubt many people would allow a "cold call" with a couple of guys and camera crew just to show up, unless it was publishers clearing house.

I just thought it was hilarious when I think it was Frank said about the guy in VA, "he's on a Kawasaki mule and a Remington .223, you don't mess with him...". I'm always going to be leery about those guys with mules from now on... bad, bad men, don't want to mess with.

It is amazing how they go into these barns and their is no dust on the items,LOL...I still like the Pickers and I look for tractors in the background.I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that does that!

"Reality" shows are one of my biggest gripes. They aren't real!

Case in point... "Axe men" ever see the episode where the boat trailer comes unhooked from the truck causing the father to once again rip up his son over the "accident". Honestly anyone who still thinks these shows arn't staged after seeing that one is really gullible. If it wasn't staged why would there be a camera pointing at the hitch ball so we could see it as it comes off?
It also seems that the same items pop up in all of the shows, storage wars, pawn stars, ghost town treasure, that sand rail made its rounds as did that 45 army colt. Guess they all dip into the same props source.

Oh gee can't wait for the next reality show that's showing tomorrow night.

Incidentally Rudi, I too find it a little frustrating to see the camera pan quickly over so many fine old tractors without them getting any attention. Wish they'd give our old iron some press.

Course they are... otherwise why would there be cameras at all? It is entertainment pure and simple. Now for some reality shows I really like how about

Eat Street
anything with Gordon Ramsay
Iron Chef -- any of em

These are reality shows that I can sink my teeth into But ifn I actually could I would probably put on some more pork

I enjoy reality shows cause they are entertaining -- simply fun to watch.

anyone ever watched Shipping Wars on A&E. Caught it last night for the first time, it's based off of uship.com or something. There were 3 or 4 guys bidding on hauling a 30k # trailway type bus over 900 lbs. 3 out of 4 of them didn't have anything larger than a 1 ton truck. I guess you can make "reality" out of anything.

I was watching the More Bullship episode at 2am (was up til 5 waiting for Em to call from the hospital), on Shipping Wars they were bidding on hauling one of Bubba's boats. One of the guys got the contract cause he had a 40 foot trailer and he hauls a lot of boats. His trailer was rated for 25 tons, the house boat supposedly weighed 15 tons. Bubba -- well let's say Bubba don't know a lot about weight or cranes to load boats - this was funny. After they got the houseboat high enough to back the trailer under they dropped the boat onto the trailer -- started bending the trailer

Ray moves aluminum hull specially rig bottoms for a local custom boat yard -- when he had the 27, 30 and 50 tons he always used either the 30 or the 50 simply for safety. Never ever relies on bottle jacks and usewhatyougot cribbing. Simply too dangerous.

There is no way anyone can load, move and unload a boat going from Alabama to Wisconsin for $2,900.00 IIRTPC... oh well. Like I said, reality shows are entertainment. Some days you get good ones other days - well you just can't fix stupid
