Paint/ primer

Ok folks, in a prior post viewtopic.php?f=1&t=75335 I asked about primer. Got some good direction there. I have decided my best option is go with the same supplier from start to finish, primer thru finish paint.
Went and talked to some local shops today and most suggested an acrylic enamel paint as a middle of the road yet durable paint. Prices varied but it looks like around $200 for everything. Lots more than we have in our budget but if that's what it takes, well figure it out somehow. Is this a good price?
I can get the IH brand paint, primer, etc for around $140, would that be ok? Also the paint samples I saw today of the IH red looked very dark, almost brown, to me.
I really want that bright shiny red color I see on most restored tractors. How do you achieve that? A different color perhaps?
I apologize for my ignorance and all the questions but I really want this thing turn turn out nice for all the 4h kids (and me!) so when we take to all the shows, parades, etc. they will be proud....

Wow, paint and primer. Now there's a subject that will bring some comments.

I painted my '48 last year with IH 2150 Ironguard using the IH primer and IH thinner as well. No hardener. Done two of them like this; both turned out fine IMO. Many on the forum will suggest using a higher grade automotive paint which gives you a higher sheen/shine and durability. Hardener may be added to the 2150 Ironguard if you choose to do so, but please do your lungs a favor and use the appropriate respitory equipment (do a search on this forum on that subject). Be careful and have fun with it....

IH50, an older red color used by IH, is a deep cherry red; my son painted his tractor that way because he wanted that deep color, we got it mixed at Napa. IH 2150 is bright red. Also, we looked at a Sherwin Williams version of IH50 which looked more like primer than paint, some of that brown patina you mentioned....we didn't go with it, obviously.

I am a big fan of the CaseIH IronGuard paint. All (well almost) of my Cubs have been entirely painted with it. It sets up quickly, has a nice shine and the rattle cans and quart paints are reasonably priced.



I even painted this mower with a foam brush....


Since I paint in small batches (never leave bare metal over night) I have used Duplicolor rattle can primer with good luck. It's under most everything.

Ironguard will give you a nice shiny red finish. I think you will be very happy with it, even if you do a little at a time with rattle can. Eventually, over the years, it will fade into that nice brick red that old tractors look like. Automotive paint will not fade, but that budget is more like $1500 for paint, hardener, reducers, plus the moon suit and supplied air respirator you need to handle it.

Acrylic enamel paint (middle of the road) is around $80 per gallon. With all the added material $200 should cover the cost on the high side.

Sorry to say I have the numbers at home Rudi. I’ll try to come up with the number and send it to you…but don’t hold your breath. What I did was... I took a Cub fender to the store and matched the paint. If I remember it was the same shade red Ford uses on their F-150 around ’97-’99 and after. I painted a few trailers with it and I feel the shade was very close to the IH shade.
I’m going to try to find some pictures I have of colors shades on trucks/tractors/trailers with the IH shade in emails and try to post them if I can. It’s hard when I don’t have my PC with me.

Sorry Rudi, I Iooked at everything I have in a cloud server for that color on a Ford truck we have and I can’t come up with anything…I have some pictures of Chevy’s…but wrong colors. I only take pictures of my tractors…unless a pretty lady is driving one of my trucks.
Come to think of it where I’m at now they have red Fords in their fleet. If it’s the correct shade I’ll snap a picture.

Shopline automative paint is much cheaper than $1500 - maybe $200-$300. Available in single stage urethane (no clearcoat). Very durable and looks as good as PPG. Doesn't cover as well, so I use red oxide primer under it.

I just finished my tractor this summer, using Case/IH Iron Guard Primer, and Iron Guard 2150 Red paint.





Make sure to watch at the Case IH dealer if you're buying red paint, as the Case IH red (what they use on New Case/IH equipment) is darker than IH 2150 red. They stock both, but the 2150 red is the correct color for the Cub.

I think I spent around $200 for all the paint for my tractor. I know the gallon of IH 2150 was about $65, and a gallon of primer was about $35, but I bought a bunch of spray cans too, for various parts and pieces. If everything is ready, a gallon of each will do the whole tractor. I did mine in pieces, so I used a bunch more paint than you would if you actually had everything ready and could shoot it all at one time.
