water inlet elbow inside dimensions?

Postby DickB » Wed Dec 12, 2012 9:21 am

On a 1955 Farmall Cub, trying to check out with everyone the dimensions on the inside diameter of the water inlet elbow up near the connection to the engine block (between the distributor and the starter motor-6v.). In springtime I'd like to put in a heater element and what I'm seeing is that the 3/8" dia. NPT heater element (Kat's 11453) goes in 2-1/2". Then there's a 1/2" NPT one (Kat's 11423) that goes in 1-3/4". Which one will work, not work, work best? Also, in case anyone's done this, Do the wires disconnect when not needed? Can you disconnect while leaving the heating element in place? I'm thinking of the hydraulics going back and forth all summer and the wires getting the worst of it.

Thanks.

I would refer back to your original post for info such as the heater cost difference and drill and tap prices to complete the job. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=75026

As far as the cord, all the units I am familiar with are hardwired and I too would be concerned about the cord when not being used. I would simply cut it short and replace the end.

Neither will fit into the water outlet. Hose diameter is shown here, outlet pipe would be almost a half inch smaller ID., since it is cast iron. http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hc/471fp.htm Ed

The specimen I measured which had quite a lot of scale built up but discounting that measured right at 1.50" inside diameter at the hose outlet. The mounting hole would likely have to be placed where previously discussed.

I noticed a water inlet on eBay this morning pictured upside down. The photo better shows where a heater could be installed.

Sure would want to drill, tap, and insert a correctly sized plug heater after determining hole I.D. If the I.D. is 1.5" then would need a heater element about 1.25" for clearance. Don't think the two heaters previously mentioned will work. Kat's technicians might have a suggestion; will give them a call next week.
