Care is necessary to avoid deforming the filler opening flanges. For instance, propping a full 5 gallon can on the rim of the funnel on one side might warp the flanges enough to cause the regular cap to fail to seal. Most of those funnels have a strainer screen to remove coarse particles from the fuel. Trash from the outside top of the fuel container can be a problem too.

I think a nice IH decal would look nice on the side!

Remember that version from my growing up years on the farm. It overcomes the problem of hitting the hole, but does nothing with preventing the overflow.

I spent a lot of time at yard sales and such trying to find a galvanized funnel like that. Gramps had one and it sure did the job. No luck though. One day I was at Princess Auto and I found this Hopkins Funnel

I still use the funnel my dad used on the farm back in the 60's. I think I would be lost without it. Had to remove the brass screen in the bottom when I used it to poor diesel fuel in the cold weather(-20F). The "wax" in the fuel would get trapped and stop the fuel. Sure made stuff to last back then.

Those galvanized funnels are still available new. At the Portland swap meet, there is usually a fella there selling galvanized steel products, drain pans, garbage cans & such. I bought one of the funnels from him a couple years ago. It's a very nice funnel, but I agree with Bus Driver about using caution with them. You can easily damage your tank fill neck.

The funnel is awesome.

My solution to getting fuel in a tank is a 'No Spill' brand gas can. I can almost guarantee that, except a careless person, will not get a single drop on the hood. If someone is strong enough to lift it, it is a 'one hand' operation. A very clever USA made invention. I have 3 now, great for 2 stroke stuff too.

A small handful of people have been doing a fleamarket/yardsale type thing lately just a few blocks over at the town hall. The first time I stopped by and saw this nice old funnel the lady wanted $35.00! Several weeks later, driving by and seeing it still on her table, I stopped and offered her $20. Nope, the price was still a firm $35. Yesterday, after seeing it stiil there after 5 or 6 weeks, I stopped by again and ask her if she was getting tired of packing and unpacking the thing weekend after weekend. I think what she was tired of was me pestering her about it so she finally gave it to me for $25 which is way more than I ever thought I would pay for something as mundane as a funnel but it is a very nice one in perfect condition with the screen still in it. I know that sounds like "antique" price but if something new comparable to this was available for any price I'd sure like to see it.

Steve:

I would still love to find one like you have, even if I never used it, it would have a special place in my barn. Lots of memories with an item like that. You did good btw.. and I like the IH decal on it to boot :D Have fun with it, I know there are a few of us envious of your good luck :!:

About twenty years ago I was at one of our Jeep swap meets and a friend of mine had this funnel for sale. I really didn't see needing it for anything at the time so I passed it by. At the end of the swap meet I was picking up some stuff I had bought and when I got back I saw it sitting on my trailer. Thinking a friend who was helping me had bought it I asked why he bought it knowing he had no use for it either. He said he didn't buy it, Ron had dropped it off as he left and told my helper to give it to me since I was the guy who always kept our club tractors full. I used it a lot on the old 404s since the old cans I used back then didn't have spouts on them.

It hasn't changed much since I got it. Maybe a fresh coat of IH red is in order.

For an idea of its size, those are 5 gallon cans propping it up.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.
