I didn't put any on my Cub or Farmall 140, and so far they are holding fine with no leaks. I would assume that the original way from the factory (gasket) should be the best way to go, as that's the way they engineered it. Maybe some others will chime in to give some feedback on their expierences.

Whatever you use (or don't), make sure you clean out the plug in the fill port. There is a small hole in one of the square sides of the plug for a vent. If its plugged up, the heat from the radiator will expand the oil and force it out, usually along this gasket, or the lower seal.
I prefer Indian Head Varnish. Perfect for this application.

Here are the vent holes Raymond is referring to.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I didn't use any on my Lo Boy and it's held up OK with just the gasket.

My new favorite sealant is 'Hylomar'. It's non-hardening and supposed to be reusable. Will give it a good test on the engine when I finally get the tranny back together. But the oil pan and front cover have held ok so far. It is a bit hard to locate, but packaged by Permatex. Ebay or Amazon is the easiest.

Thanks guys. And the plug cleaning is on my list. While doing a search I came across the video that explained that. Who would have ever thought that can happen.
