New BN

Hi gang,

Procured my first Farmall and it is a '45 BN. Serial number 123666. Not the nicest paint job thats forsure but something to tinker on this fall. It purrs like a kitten when running so I really lucked out. Some questions in my mind and need to read some other posts to get answers....

-manual (already answered I think elsewhere)
-Have a Zenith carb but how do I identify which one to order a carb kit?
-economical place for new rear tires?
-first task will be to get the brakes going
-second will be to wire it up properly
-any sources for a used second seat? would love to add that onto it, otherwise will leave it pretty much as is!

The carburetor should have a number on it, and I believe it might be on the top, and easy to see if it's not covered up with paint or crud. I believe the number will be stamped directly into the carb top, rather than on a tag which would probably be missing by now anyway. If it is the original carb, there will be an IH part number, and also the Zenith model number. If you can't find any numbers, the only other way to get the correct kit will be to take yours apart, and then compare the gasket to pictures of Zenith carb kits, and choose the kit with a gasket that matches yours.

If in doubt, pull the carb off and take it to your Case/IH dealer and he will be able to get you the correct kit. I'd stay away from the TSC or aftermarket kits and go with the OEM kit.

Looks good! On your tires, see if you have a tire dealer close that sells agricultural tires. My local dealer is generally cheaper than any of the www dealers, can get any brand that they can, and can mount them too.

Be advised, the Case-IH dealer most likely will have aftermarket carb kits. Did you ever hear of the "Gold Value" line of parts available from Case-IH? Tisco is the supplier.

What is the better service manual for these? the GSS5031 covers the power unit but will that include things like the tranny and associated parts incase something is needed there? Found the parts manual online but always appreciate tips from a good manual before attempting to take something apart.

Unfortunately I do not have all the different manuals yet or on-line. I am working on it though. Suggest you look on for a good original Owner's Manual -- not the repros you will find on CD/DVD etc., the originals when in good shape are usually the best deal. This is a pretty good search string - Farmall BN Manuals. Stay away from those really bad repros. If you can't find an original soon enough, then I suggest you check with Binder Books, who are the only licensed reproduction house for IH manuals. They are clean and clear unlike other offerings from other sources.

Just an update....with 2.5' of snow in the last week I finally got around to bringing the tractor into the shop and snow melted off of it. Not much else to do but shovel and tinker so plan to take the axle tubes out and figure out why the brakes are sticking. Might as well put new seals in there as well when the axles are out. A bit more complicated with the narrow front end as I will only be able to do one side at a time unless you guys have some magic to allow me to take both sides off and balance it without much work.

The brakes on my B need work too. I have planned to built a couple of out riggers that bolt onto the Mounting pads on the torque tube. I will have a support drop down from the inside and another out about 3 ft. with some bracing in between. I will prob use large threaded rod with Casters on the bottom. Has anyone else fabbed up something like this ? I do not want to repeat anyone's past mistakes if I can help it. LOL

BJ I have considered something similar but in the end I figure if I did one side at a time I would have less clutter in my small shop. Got the left side all apart. The brake band is fine. Turns out (excuse my parts naming convention) the rod on the brake band that connects to the adjusting yoke was seized and therefore the mechanism was not smooth. Needed a little heat to get that pin out and will hopefully get it back together this eve after a good cleaning and lubrication. It was actually easy for one person to lift off the axle tube including the final drive. I had removed the rim and associated wheel weights though.

I guess I will eat my words. I needed help lifting the left side axle assembly back up to get it aligned and the bolts in. Took about 30 seconds with 2 people and was not bad at all. Got that whole side back together finally and on to the right side. Keep in mind the brake band is right next to the tranny on the left side. The right side looks like it is next to the final drive assembly. Makes me wish I had a service manual!

Oh and on the right side I took the wheel off with the weights on it and man that caught me off guard when it started to tip. The peddle crank works fine on this side and is not seized but I am expecting some issues when I open this side up with the brake band.

Got the right side finished up. Turns out there was crud in the opening for the brake band rod and it was not moving freely. The right side is much easier to do as there are 6 bolts for the final drive assembly and two big ones on the bottom for the drawbar. You need enough room on the right side of the tractor for the axle shaft to come out along with the final drive. Lucky I had 1.5" to spare. All back together and need a couple replacement bolts as some where a bit iffy. Other than that the great weather made it easy and much snow has melted. No doubt we will have another 3' - 6' before spring really arrives. The BN is now back outside and put the JD40C in the shop as one brake band is cracked and that is more of an ordeal to remove.

Also need to find me a Cub!
