When I first posted I assumed the pipe wrench or vise grip method had already been tried unsuccessfully and the case was to be reused.

Since the case is destined for the scrap pile, I would certainly attempt to recover them utilizing the Jim Becker sledge hammer method instead of cross drilling and popping them out. You really have nothing to lose but time trying to break them out.

I am replacing my damaged trans case. New one is missing dowels on one side. Was going to use the dowels out of the old case. I can see they are easier to make or buy than remove.

As hard as it may be on my nerves to bust the case with the sledge, I may utilize that method...

If you only need one side, why don't you try vise grips? I took them out in the past and it was not that big of a deal. If you chew one up you still have hammer option.
