Best deluxe seat cushion

Postby grasser » Tue Jan 22, 2013 7:16 am

My birthday is coming, so I'm thinking about replacing the seat cushion on my '77 Cub.
Steiners has one with springs:
http://www.steinertractor.com/IHS578-se ... ion-bottom

And I've found the foam style several places including a seller on eBay from Ohio selling new ones made in the USA. I emailed the eBay seller and he said they have 4 layers of foam and are better than the spring style.

So what do I really want?

I have one with springs and one with foam. I like the springs better, but then, I've been riding on those for 40+years.
Everybody keeps talking about silver, silver, silver. Pretty sure ours came in black.

I'm 99% sure this is the seat cushion TM used to sell. I have on on my '49 Cub that I converted to a deluxe seat, and I have one on my Super A, also converted to a deluxe seat. I have been very happy with them, they are the closest thing to original I have been able to find.

I am not 100% sure but I think the square nose Cubs, or at least the later ones, had black cushions.

Yeah, I'm thinking this black one:
http://www.steinertractor.com/JDS270-bo ... at-cushion
is what I'm looking for.
The silver is cloth, and the black one is vinyl which I think I prefer.

I have bought a lot of seat cushions from Y & F Cushion Mfg. Co. in Wauseon, Ohio 43567. Although I have not bought any Cub deluxe seat cushions, because I do not have a Cub with a deluxe seat, yet.
I have had very good luck with there cushions and would recommend them. They will make them any thickness you want, and they have a lot of them in stock.

They had silver Canvas, and black also. I believe that the silver may have been an option. I* have 6 Cubs that came with the silver and Dad's 140 came black

My 1970 and 1977 have black original ones. Matches the riveted back rest. Not quite as squared off at the top as the aftermarket foam ones.

I either need a new one or a 'do over' for my Lo Boy..... has cracks in the vinyl, foam is what they make sponges from, right??

The one foam cushion I bought was useless, good for looks only. When I sat on it my bottom went all the way down to the plywood. Took it back the next day! Be very careful of any foam aftermarket seats. My 63 came new with springs (silver), and I have a TM replacement waiting in the wings. The 78 may be factory foam (black), corners not square. I like springs, may have the old one recovered for a spare.

I bought the black vinyl spring style from Steiner's and it showed up today along with the factory style riveted back rest.
The seat cushion on my cub had been replaced with the silver foam (not sure what manufacturer), and the backrest was original.
There is no comparison in my opinion.
The spring style is much more comfortable and supports better. Of course, the replacement cushion that was on the cub may have been low quality, so I can only speak of my own experience.

Thanks Gasser, I looked at their seat base online and like the idea of the springs.... the original seat cushion is far superior to the foam one. Guess I should get off my duff and order one!

BW, You wil really like the spring seat! Waiting till I get tractor back in garage (from carport) to install TM seat. Already using TM back and armrests. I'm really enjoying the armrests as I never had them before.

Yep Dan, I have the one off the 77 on the Lo Boy (rain/snow got in the cracked foam one, I slipped on bringing it in ONCE) and my loader Cub has one too. Giant difference with springs.

BTW Boss.... that's Hamilton Bob (a site sponsor) and he sells the parts individually too:

Metal seat frame hurts my leg/hip. Armrest helps with that. Must be plowing too deep, lol!
