It has an o ring on it. If it has a grove it will most likely leak IF THE SEAL rides in that grove

This is something I've done before...Try to position the seal in the housing so the seal lip is not in the groove. If that can be done you'll be ok.

I don't know what O'ring Boss is talking about though...maybe I'm thinking of the wrong seal....

Jack, talking about the retainer that the seal goes in, there is an o ring on it where it slides into the case to keep it from leaking

The bearing retainer does not need to be removed to change the oil seal, just pry it out using a puller or a large screw driver....
Compare you new seal to the old one to see just where it will ride, chances are it's much thinner and will be in a different location.

It sounds to me like the differential bearing carrier seal? There is also a seal on the final drive (behind the brake). The old ones were leather.

It may be wise to check the level in the transmission, but if you are going to do that may as well drain it and change it. (HyTran recommended). They are know to fill up with water and the easiest place to drain is out the differential seals and then onto the brakes and eventually out the drain holes under the brakes.
